Read It Several Times, December 17, 2005
This review is from: West New Rochelle, N.Y.: The Italian People (Paperback)
This book about the Italian immigrants of an affluant suburb of New York City is a strong reminder of the difficulties encountered with a new land, new culture and new language. It is a well-done summary of how Mr. D'Ermes grew up in New Rochelle, N.Y. in a home with two immigrant parents. This Italian section of New Rochelle, N.Y. was an enclave of 25,000 people (almost 99% Italian) where the Italian customs and langusge were predominant. When I read this book it brought back fond memories of growing up in this fantastice neighborhood with Italian family and friends. I will read this book over-and-over again to continue to remember a time an place that is now gone; never to return again. I recommend it to enyone interested in tracing the life-style of Italian in this new world.
