A mediocre recording of classic musical, December 20, 1999

I was very excited when I bought this recording, but the experience of listening to it was disappointing. Caroline O' Conner stands head and shoulders above the rest of the cast as Anita on this recording, while Tinuke Olafimihan makes a charming, through sometimes shrill, Maria. But Paul Manuel as Tony has an irritating hardness in his voice, one that does not suit Bernstein's lyrical score or the romanticism of the character of Tony. The rest of the supporting cast tries hard to create a spontaneous and energetic atmosphere, but doesn't quite succeed. This recording falls flat - rather stick to the stunning Original Broadway Cast, which is available from Amazon.
