It's too bad that younger generations of viewers of WEST SIDE STORY, when viewing the scenes of superb ensemble choreography will at once think of certain fashionable brands of chinos. In our society, where nothing is sacred, it's a shame that our most elevated moments of artistic achievement end up being shanghaid for commercial exploitation.
That aside, WEST SIDE STORY has it all. A love story with a timeless and universal appeal. A pulsating energy from beginning to end. A fantastic libretto and Leonard Bernstein's outstanding score, with performances to match. Brilliant cinematography that captures the flavour of NYC circa 1960 with its decaying neighbourhoods and smoldering juvenile gang tension. It really is a climax to such worthy precursors as "The Blackboard Jungle" of 1955.
WEST SIDE STORY also features some fine acting performances, although curiously not from the leads. The Supporting Oscars bestowed on Rita Moreno and George Chakiris were well deserved as it was they who supplied the Latino passion in spades. Natalie Wood looks gorgeous as usual but uses her eyes rather than her body to express her emotions, which is not very Puerto Rican at all. Richard Beymer is rather wooden and there is a lack of chemistry between him and Natalie. Not surprising, considering that Ms Wood was not pleased with his selection to play opposite her and subsequently gave him the cold shoulder throughout the production.
What really energates WEST SIDE STORY is the brilliant choreography of Jerome Robbins. From the long opening gang ballet scene to it's tragic but inevitable ending, this film never lags. Much more than a Musical, this masterpiece satisfies all the senses and it remains unsurpassed in its achievement.

This movie is has the essence of timelessness. It's interesting to see work by Mr. Bernstein and Mr. Sondheim early in their careers. The choreography has an athletic precision, which was Mr. Robbins' hallmark. It's one of the few movies I own and enjoy seeing it again from time to time.

The version we watched is low grade SD and the title sections did not properly make the transition to whatever file format they use..
It would be nice if could be remastered though I don't know how it was originally shot.

When i was a teenager and living in the West Village (NYC) all of us were if love with the movie--not the violence but the dancing and of course the love between Tony and Maria. It was years later that I learned that the story was a modernization of Shakespears Romeo and Juliet.

One of my favorite musicals. I think it is the best modern remake of Romeo and Juliet. The music is great. The choreography is inventive and I liked all the actors. Only downside is Natalie Wood's lip syncing but I like her so much in the role so I was able to overlook that.

G C G#, B C Bb... Just a little musical introduction, an overture if you will.

Everybody that considers themselves a fan of Broadway Musicals has a favorite. Mine is West Side Story. I never saw it on Broadway, but I have seen many productions of it. I have even played in the pit band for some of those productions. Seldom, if ever is a film version of a Broadway musical as good as the stage production. This film is no exception. It is better!

This Amazon package is a no frills deal. Basically just a copy of the one-sheet on the cover and the DVD. But that's all you need. Everything else is on the DVD. Once the opening eight bars have played and you hear your first finger snap, you are there, in the neighborhood, down the block, on the street.

When the DVD arrived, two days earlier than Amazon had predicted, I was chomping at the bit because I would finally have a copy of this show that I could jump around in and replay things without ruining the media. After having sat through the DVD a few times since it arrived, I have found that I do not jump around or replay only sections of it. But I do use pause a lot so that I can compose myself now and then. For example, it takes me a few pauses to make it through "A Boy Like That."

I don't care if you are a Shark, a Jet, a cop or soda jerk. I don't care if you love it for the music, the dance or just the beautiful people in the cast, you are going to love this simple presentation of what I consider one of the finest pieces of American art ever created. And, while "I have no mind, I'm the village idiot," I know I am right about that.

I was not a fan of Romeo and Juliet when I read it freshman year, but after viewing this musical for the first time, I want to read it again! The end of this movie actually brought me to tears! I couldn't help it! I tried to hold them back, but when Maria held Anton (Tony)'s dead body in her arms, I cried! It is the story of two gangs who hate each other and are fighting over territory in the streets. The Jets are a group of white boys who have grown up in the streets because their parents aren't really the Brady Bunch kind (they are druggies, etc.). The Sharks are Puerto Ricans who have just moved to America and are trying to establish themselves in the new territory. The female Puerto Ricans see much opportunity in America, but the males are very pessimistic and feel unwelcome in this strange new land. The Sharks and Jets are cautious around each other and even taunt each other, but they never take action until Bernardo notices that his sister, Maria, has a love interest in Tony, who is a Jet. Anita, Maria's best friend, and Bernardo try to convince Maria to stop loving Tony, but Maria can't help it! Tempers flair and Bernardo and Riff are killed in a fight. You can guess what happens next if you have read R&J- revenge is on the minds of every gang member. The choreography is great and the music awesome. "I feel pretty," "Tonight," and "Somewhere" are some of my favorites! The extra dvd is disapppointing, but hey. The booklet has the full libretto and is nice, but I don't know how long it will last because unfortunately it doesn't appear to be made well.
