Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 1-4--O'Brien's detailed, watercolor-washed cartoons lend just the right flair to Cox's goofy story about a chili cook-off that produces smells powerful enough to attract the attention of a roving space creature that sorta resembles a green and purple longhorn. Screeching to a halt, he lands on Earth and saunters through the fairgrounds, slurping up all the chili in sight. He burps his approval after consuming all of the contestants' entries but really gets his nostrils flaring when he puts cowlips to Mama's recipe that has been "enhanced" by her children. Mama hosts weekly chili dinners, where folks "moseyed in from nearly everywhere" and she had been pretty confident that she would win the competition. She wants to use the prize money to repair the huge potholes in her ranch road so her kids won't go flying out of the bed of the pickup anymore. Cox catches some of the vernacular just right and O'Brien decks out all the Texans (baby, too) in some sort of hat (gaucho, sombrero, ten gallon, etc.). A silly and visually jolly story with a logic sure to appeal to young `uns.

This review is from: West Texas Chili Monster (Hardcover)
We found this book at the library and fell in love with it. It's fun to read as a parent, and my son loves to hear it and join in. It's rip-roarin, boot-scootin, west texas fun! It's a story about Mama's famous chili that is entered in a chili contest by her and her five or six kids. A 'monster' from outer space smells the chili and comes for a taste. The pictures are colorful and fun, and the story is fun to read. We recommend it!
