Book Description

0813118549 978-0813118543 September 4, 1994 second edition

" An essential resource for scholars, students, and all lovers of the Mountaineer State. From bloody skirmishes with Indians on the early frontier to the Logan County mine war, the story of West Virginia is punctuated with episodes as colorful and rugged as the mountains that dominate its landscape. In this first modern comprehensive history, Otis Rice and Stephen Brown balance these episodes of mountaineer individualism against the complexities of industrial development and the growth of social institutions, analyzing the events and personalities that have shaped the state. To create this history, the authors weave together many strands from the past and present. Included among these are geological and geographical features; the prehistoric inhabitants; exploration and settlement; relations with the Indians; the land systems and patterns of ownership; the Civil War and the formation of the state from the western counties of Virginia; the legacy of Reconstruction; politics and government; industrial development; labor problems and advances; and cultural aspects such as folkways, education, religion, and national and ethnic influences. For this second edition, the authors have added a new chapter, bringing the original material up to date and carrying the West Virginia story through the presidential election of 1992. Otis K. Rice is professor emeritus of history and Stephen W. Brown is professor of history at West Virginia Institute of Technology.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good read, excellent trivia, July 19, 2011
This review is from: West Virginia: A History (Hardcover)
I very much enjoy researching West Virghinia and this would be a great intro book for the subject. It is at times a tad dry, BUT, overall the book does have a flow and brings out some great hidden history and trivia of the state.

5.0 out of 5 stars Covers everything!, December 26, 2011
This review is from: West Virginia: A History (Hardcover)
This book is a great, interesting read. It covers WV Prehistory (the Adena- famous for the large mounds seen all over the state- and Hopewell Cultures and others), succession from VA during the Civil War, the first governors of the state and even (relatively) modern politics, including Senator Byrd's contributions to road construction and other projects funded by the federal government. The book leaves out the fact, however, that Byrd was a former member of the KKK and had the following to say about African Americans:

"I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side ... Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds. "
-- Robert C. Byrd, in a letter to Sen. Theodore Bilbo (D-MS), 1944

I've been looking for a long time and this is undoubtedly the most comprehensive book concerning WV history you will ever find. It isn't a biased account at all yet I have to say it leaves out some important details. The book does cover everything but only cursorily in many cases. Still a very, very good read for historians and laymen alike.

A Land of Grandeur. In 1784, nearly two hundred years before a popular song referred to West Virginia as "almost Heaven," Thomas Jefferson wrote that the contrast between the "placid and delightful" Shenandoah Valley and the "wild and tremendous" mountains at Harpers Ferry, the Potomac gateway to the state, was worth a journey across the Atlantic Ocean. Read the first page
