It's Gooooood,
By Ben (Huntington, WV United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: West for Wishing (Audio CD)
ok i don't post too many reviews but after reading the other reviews that said this band sounded like New Found Glory, i had to come and set it straight. these guys really do not sound like NFG at all. seriously, i just don't see it. Ok you know the starting line has those two songs with Nate from Finch on their "say it like you mean it" CD?...well, it's sorta like that, except the quality is not as rich cuz it has a nice raw sound to this disc and it sounds great...and at times you can see a Finch influence but it's never so bad as to call it a ripoff or anything cuz the whole screamo thing is some of the best music and is really enjoyable. i like how they keep the scream in the background and the clean, singing vocals mainly up front. it is only 15 minutes long though and the first song is only 1 minute long and that's the only bad thing, but i think i'll survive until a full length is released, this band has a great sound and i doubt i'll be let down by them in the future, so basically get this CD if you like screamo and The Starting Line and Senses Fail with a Finch type scream. defiantely worth it. -Ben EmoCoreAllStar@aol.com

Sour Grapes,
By A Customer
This review is from: West for Wishing (Audio CD)
First off, I want to say that this is a good EP. It's not my favorite kind of music, but it's well done. It's a little heavy on the screamo sound that's come into fashion lately, but I see real talent and potential in this band. They'll only get better. But I suppose this review is really just a retort to Scott Heisel's scathing criticism of Matchbook Romance for not thanking his website in their liner notes. After all it was enirely punknews.org that was responsible for their signing with Epitaph, and not, say, their music. Apparently his purpose in maintaining his website is to ride the coattails of talented groups to minor glory-by-association. As for his accusations of MR ripping off Finch and New Found Glory, well, they're just so well-thought out and strongly supported that I don't even know where to begin. But here goes. Yes, they may sound a little like Finch. They have screaming and guitars. And they sound just like NFG becuase they have singing. But as for "aping" either band, not so. Matchbook Romance's sound is all its own. They're more melodic than Finch and less poppy than NFG, with technical guitar and drum work thrown in to keep it interesting. So in short, if you enjoy listening to talented people playing enjoyable music, give this EP a listen. After all, it's available for free streaming on the band's website. But if you like reading groundless, poorly written diatribes against hardworking bands, I guess go to punknews.org, or one of the many sites it imitates.

blahblahblahblah,
By marie g "your best friend" (california here i come) - See all my reviews
This review is from: West for Wishing (Audio CD)
umm. well i hated emo. because they all try so hard to be different that they ended up being the same. and even though that hasnt changed yet.... i picked up matchbook romance at target because the cd was NOT in a jewel case so i figured it had to be okay (woo noncomformers!) and it turned out to be really good. not the first time i listened to it, or the second. more like the eigth. but i really like the greatest fall song and the one that goes "Take my hand and never let me go." i used to be embarrased for screaming guys but this band made it okay. it actually made it really good.
quit trashing emo. oh and pick up the used and something by pantera while you're at it!!!!
