Westbrick Murders is easily one of the most unusual independent films I've seen in years. The movie has been marketed as being in the visual style of Sin City, but that's not entirely accurate.

The film is definitely shot as though it's a graphic novel, with unusual but stimulating colors. The animation sequences were surprisingly good, as were the CGI shots. More than Sin City, Shaun Rana was going for a Natural Born Killers feel, though he borrows a bit too much from the film's theme.

Westbrick follows serial killers Billy and Barbara, and an ex-cop's hunt for them to avenge the murder of his wife. Unfortunately, the plot is weak, as is the film's dialogue. I also found the casting to be unusual. It's bizarre watching Sami Darr, an East Indian from Denmark, inexplicably attempt a Texas accent (like watching him impersonate Kirk Lazarus from Tropic Thunder). In fact, most of the cast from Denmark all speak as though they're from the Southwest. A very sexy Anna Bård plays Billy's partner in crime, and for reasons I couldn't figure out, Eric Roberts makes a brief appearance in the film.

This is basically quirky film noir, with some hints of dark comedy here and there, and its conclusion is unusually graphic and brutal. The credits are unintentionally funny, as Shaun Rana's name literally appears 47 times in a row. Wardrobe, transportation, set design, even the catering. The only other crew member actually on the set was the one guy holding the boom microphone, otherwise this was a one-man operation.

While this was a low-budget indie flick that was light on an original story, I give Shaun Rana credit for the unusual way he edited the film. Too many filmmakers stick to what's safe just to make a buck, so I respect Rana for taking risks. Love it or hate it, Westbrick Murders is off the beaten path, and deserves to be watched at least once.

That was retarded....couldn't get past the first like 20min...the animation was baaaaad...but whatever everybody has different tastes...i guess...So funny how serial killers have become so glamorized when in reality they are weak little men who only feel powerful attacking the vulnerable-i don't know maybe it got better later, but i couldn't just couldn't watch anymore.
