Quality of stand is good the umbrella material is OK.

The stand is decently sturdy and tough, but it doesn't have the widest base so make sure to weigh it down if you're outside.

Overall, it's a great starting kit for photographers.

This was my first flash umbrella kit purchase, after using it for about 50 shots of whoever I could get to stand in front of the camera. I am pleased!

Note- I am a hobbyist, I am sure professionals can find better products for more money, but for home use and light traveling needs, this feels like it will fit perfectly.

I used this with a Nikon SB-600, and some of the CowboyStudio remote triggers.

I took off the black umbrella cover and was using this as a shoot-through soft light. In doors everything was stable and worked as expected, I wouldn't recommend using this outdoors due to wind.

This being my first umbrella purchase, I don't really know if dollar for dollar where this stands, but I am happy with my purchase, and after a few hours of playing around, I am tempted to pickup another.

I purchased a pair of these to get started with a pair of Speed lights. For the most part they are a reasonable starter kit, however due to the Flash bracket design I wouldn't recommend them.

Typically flash brackets for speed lights have a 10 degree angle on the umbrella hole. This 10 degree angle allows the flash to point down towards the center of the umbrella rather than straight towards the outer portion of the umbrella. With the 10 degree angle you will have better lighting with a more even lit umbrella. The Wescott speed light brackets do not feature this 10 degree angle and instead are level, aiming your speed light at the outer portion of the umbrella rather than the middle.

The lack of the 10 degree angle is further exacerbated when one utilizes a wireless flash trigger which elevates the flash another inch or so.

My final reservation is with the knob for adjusting the umbrella rod. The knob is a single piece of metal consisting of the thread and knob. The knob is very small and as a result it is difficult to torque the knob tight enough to hold the umbrella reliably. I found myself having to re-tighten it when moving the umbrella around.

The strobist blog has some recommendations for gear and I think I would go that route had I known of these two short comings in this product.

This is a very fairly priced starter kit. Like the other reviews say, it's best used indoors. To use it outdoors, the stand would need to be *much* sturdier, or at least weighted a lot more at the base. I've nearly knocked it over a few times just inside the house.

It seems to light evenly and the stand and umbrella adapter do their job. For the most part, all of it folds back up into a nice transportable size, and I might even be able to throw the light stand in the same bag as my tripod.

For shots taken using the kit, search Flickr for the tag "westcott43inchkit". I'll try to keep adding pictures to that.

Well, after reading everyone's review I was on the fence. But I jumped in and got it anyways just to start using better light sources. Much like a new toys, I played with this as soon as I got it. I don't like the black cover for bounce flash, I'm a simple person and it took longer to put back on than my attention span would allow. But I really like the shoot through look so it's a win either way and the cover sits in my bag just in case. I heard reviews saying that it is not sturdy enough to use in huricane weather, or something like, well duh. I have done a few photo shoots with the little ones in the family and it is still going strong, if it makes it through them then the military should use it. It stands tall enough to get the job done, if you need it to go higher grab someone and make them hold it higher for you (voice activated light stand). It packs well enough I can drag it around with me and not be annoyed by it. I'm not sure what a better quality (more expensive) set up will do, but I like this one. It does what it is supposed to do, I have no complaints and I will be getting another one if it last a bit longer. I guess if I start going on tour with Joe McNally I'll look into better gear, but for everything else this does the job. You don't don't need a corvette to drive, just something that will get from point A to point B. This set up gets you to point B just fine.

The only complaint I have is that the screw on top of the umbrella is plastic and the silver paint on it flakes off. The shoe mount grips well but I covered the base of mine with duct tape to protect the SB's contacts from rubbing against bare metal. I use the umbrella with an SB-600 and SB-800. It's a good purchase for $70.

This kit does exactly what it's supposed to do! I use it with my Nikon SB-900 and I shoot portraits. The light I'm getting shooting through this umbrella is SOFT! The stand is a little on the lighter side, but feels like good quality. If you're shooting outdoors, defiantly grab a sandbag! I am thinking about also picking up one of Westcott's 60" umbrellas!

Only complaint I had is that the fabric on the white umbrella where it attaches to the umbrella frame was a little torn from the factory. It still stayed tight on the frame but looked as if it was just barely hanging by a thread (pun intended)

Had the girlfriend reinforce it with a little white thread and we're good to go!
