Product Description

Size: Ice Light

The Ice Light is the first ever easily-handheld LED daylight light source. Designed by award-winning photographer and lecturer, Jerry Ghionis, the Ice Light offers the ability to shoot and light in tandem without the need of heavy light stands or additional mounting systems. The Ice Light features the latest Lithium Ion battery technology and can be run both AC or DC power. Batteries are built into the lightweight 1.3 lb. design and can run for a full 60 minutes at full power. Fast charge times are less than 2.5 hours. Plug the Ice Light into any standard power outlet and run continuously (all while charging the unit). The latest LED technology offers a flicker-free light source perfect for both photo and video applications. The custom-designed curved front has a 72-degree wide beam spread ideal for achieving soft, even wrap-around light. The LED array combined with the diffused front face offers an extremely soft and evenly wrap-around daylight light source. This eliminates the need for additional light modifying tools. Lamps are true daylight color and rated for over 50,000 hours of use. The ergonomic design allows for single-handed operation and requires no additional mounting accessories. Both ends of the Ice Light incorporate a ¼-20” Thread with the option of mounting to a light stand, tilter bracket or mini tripod. The included carry case with shoulder and belt strap make going on-location a breeze. The Ice Light fits inside most regulation carry-on luggage. Multi voltage 100-240v allows for adaptability when traveling internationally. Attach a gel using the included gel clips to easily go from Daylight to Tungsten or add color for more dramatic results. The Ice Light includes the battery charger/power cord, 2 gel clips and carry case. Patent pending.

Despite reading lots (and lots) of groups and boards micro-evaluating the light output and berating the product on the price, I decided as a professional wedding photographer that the benefits were worth the investment. And I'm happy I did!

The product IS expensive. Whether that is a factor for you is based on whether or not you can defer the cost of investment into the quality of your images and the increased business you can offer your clients. For me, this will alw me to create distinctive images with an ease to flow. I have studio lighting and battery packs. I have small flash strobes. I even have a variety of cheap LED lights (160 LED) units. None give me the portability and ease of set-up as this.

And there are other "hardware store" options, but they sometimes require power and are never professional enough looking for client use. Nail in that coffin.

Brightness - the unit is bright. Very bright. I can't tell you how many lumens or lux, but it was much brighter than I expected it to be. As Jerry said, you're never going to beat God, so these would be useless during the sunlight (try a reflector), but will add kick on overcast days, failing light, or as is often the case, a dark, cavernous church or reception hall. I've read some people complaining about having to increase ISO to get an exposure. Imagine how much you would have to increase your ISO without it. And again, I'm in the professional game. If you are complaining about your ISO, it may be time to consider an updated camera body.

Build quality - I expected the unit to feel a bit "cheap", figuring the manufacturers would have cut corners to increase profitability. I was wrong. Everything about the unit feels great.

I was blown away by the video on Jerry's site about the Ice LIght so I had to order it. Working with it over the past month I have found it handy in sooo many situations in the field and in the studio! My photography is going to a whole new level! Thanks Jerry! Caroline

What sometimes get's lost in these reviews is that different photographers have different needs and therefore cost is not the only concern. I consider myself an Ultra Portability Shooter. Ultra portability drives my buying decisions. On any trip I take I want to have enough space for any kind of photo or videography. I'm always weighing size vs quality and price. It's for this reason that I shoot Micro Four Thirds (Olympus, Panasonic, Black Magic) and also the reason for buying two Ice Lights. One could argue that their are even smaller LED lights but the light from those lights wouldn't deliver the really nice wraparound without carrying extra gear with you and likely also not the same coverage area. It's the shape and quality of light that Ice Lights so versatile. And two of them stacked on top of each other take up a minuscule sliver of any airline compliant regular carry-on suitcase. It is true that these are not as bright as many other LED lights but that again is influenced by your style of shooting. The vast majority of my time I will be using these lights together with natural light. For those situations where natural light is not an option a reflector should do the trick -- if not I would buy an inexpensive $30 to $40 LED light that's dimmable to augment the Ice Lights in a three point lighting scenario.

This is the first LED light I have used, and I like it overall, but before buying one, make sure you know what you're buying and then decide if it is the right choice for your own photography. I like the convenience of this product, and in certain portrait situations it is perfect for adding just a little extra touch of light, but I disagree with the reviewers who are dazzled by how bright this light is, because I feel that it is just barely in the range where it is even usable. If you have expensive lenses and like making portraits with wide apertures, this may be just your ticket, but please know that your ISO will still need to be in the 640-1200 range, and your shutter speed will most likely be right at the minimum where you can safely hand hold your camera. Plus you will be holding the light very close to your subject. If all of this fits in with your style of photography, then go for it, as you will probably like the Ice Light. If you want to light a group, stop your lens down, or freeze action, forget about it, you need something else. An added bonus with this light is that kids will be really amused by your "light saber," but when they ask to play with your $500 toy, you probably ought to tell them "no."

This light is great..Especially in dark places..I love the carrying case it comes with..Put this on a stand and use it with a Joby ball head and its angles are limitless for your clients..Saving for one more as we speak..Continuous lighting is the future of photography..You can see exactly where the light falls..

Okay let me first off say that I know this thing is one of the biggest controversies out there right now as far as lighting tools and people are ranting about the price and the battery life.

Let me also say that since I bought this thing, my detail shots are out of this world. It provides perfect, soft, adjustable light immediately, and it's as controllable as my assistant (who is usually making lightsaber noises in the corner)

After taking it out for 2 weddings (including a few outdoor shots) and an engagement shoot (ring shots) I brought it to a headshot session and used ONLY this light and one silver side reflector and nailed the headshot session.

This thing may not be cheap, but it is a replacement for a flash and pocketwizard and that makes it CHEAPER than it needs to be to be a good investment for your business.

And lastly, about that battery life. I did all of the above on one charge. If you're using it the way it's SUPPOSED to be used, you will have no issues at all.
