WESTERN DESERT, Book Two in The Chronicles of Lily Carmichael trilogy, takes off where WANING MOON ends. Genetically enhanced sixteen-year-old Lily Carmichael, and seventeen-year-old Will Callahan embark on a journey across a sun-ravaged and decimated US in the year 2057, bound for the Western Desert on a dangerous rescue mission. The survivors they meet along the way put Lily’s healing abilities to the test and challenge Will’s resolve to find his missing father—no matter the cost. But even with the burden of life and death on their shoulders, and the Industry hot on their trail, the greatest challenge they face is trusting their hearts to each other.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great story June 25, 2013
I've never received a book directly from an author in order to review it and I was a little hesitant because I wanted to be able to write an honest review. But I'm very glad I did, because I really enjoyed the first book in the trilogy (Waning Moon) and was looking forward to this one. Western Desert is the second book in the Lily Carmichael trilogy, and this is just as good, if not better. The author did much of the world-building in the first book, but more is explained here, and the action in Western Desert starts right away. The characters are memorable and believable. Lily is a great character, she has her head on straight but isn't invincible. Will is more of a mystery, but his motivation (saving his father) is clear. The post-apocalyptic world the author portrays is frighteningly possible, and the choice many people are forced to make between liberty and safety (sound familiar?) is scary. All in all, a really enjoyable book and highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A real page turner July 6, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
PJ Sharon writes spellbinding books. Western Desert is a sequel to Waning Moon which I also read, and it is equally as good. Lily, Will and Sam, the McKinley sisters; they are all enchanting characters. I couldn't wait to see what Ms. Sharon had in store for them next. Great reads, both of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than a lot of mainstream books November 26, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Western Desert is the second in the Chronicles of Lily Carmichael by P.J Sharon and it’s as excellent as the first. This dystopian/post-apocalyptic series should be as popular as the Hunger Games; it really is that good. The only reason it isn’t on everyone’s lips and on everyone’s Kindles is because as an indie author, Sharon does not have the backing of a big publisher, and that’s all the more reason why you should read this book and shout about it far and wide. It’s beautifully crafted, well-polished and a unique and powerful story. Books like this make liars of those who say that indie books are of lesser quality. This is far better than many mainstream books I’ve read.

The human race has pretty much stuffed the planet in Lily Carmichael’s world. Radiation is so high that you have to stay inside in the middle of the day and the level is climbing, extreme storms wreck havoc and a virus has wiped out a large number of the population. New York is in ruins and inhabited by murderous gangs and the Government is under the control of the Vice President, a megalomaniac who has taken control of many of the cities and given people food, shelter and medical care in exchange for their freedom to choose their jobs, homes and spouses. Huge domes protect these cities and towns from the radiation, and outside of them, people take their chances with radiation, bandits and lack of food, goods and services. Lily lives on the outside and that’s where she intends to stay.

In this book, Lily, accompanied by love-interest Will, is on a mission to wrench her brother back from the clutches of the Vice President and the evil doctor who oversaw the genetic modifications that make Lily and her brother, as well as Will and another boy stolen from her hometown, important for the megalomaniac’s plans.

5.0 out of 5 stars The New Must-Read Series Continues to Thrill! January 26, 2014
WESTERN DESERT, Book Two in The Chronicles of Lily Carmichael trilogy
By P.J. Sharon

P.J. Sharon doesn’t disappoint with the second installment of the “The Chronicles of Lily Carmichael.” This story continues a month later from when Waning Moon left off. Lily and Will head into the lion’s den in a rescue mission for her brother, Zeph and their friend, Luke.

The first book hinted at the destruction of the cities and human life but this book goes in depth of the devastation and the aftermath. It paints a dire portrait of the consequences that humans in our current time period’s actions lead to the earth rebelling to find balance in the future. Lily finds herself on a journey, not just physically, but emotionally and morally. She has to dig deep within herself to find how far she is willing to depart from the person she wants to be in order to achieve her goals.

This second book is equally as intriguing as the first. The plot twists and dangers the characters face are believable and horrible at the same time. The thought of questioning the trust in human nature and if there is any good left worth fighting for is a sobering ideal. The premise that what we do now can and will affect the future paints a startling picture of just how bad it can be. Author P.J. Sharon treats these subjects and even more harrowing ones such as sex slavery and violence for survival with grace and care. While the characters deal with these adversities, there is never the feeling that all hope is lost.
That is one of the many themes that run simultaneous with many others throughout these books.

Lily will learn more about the genetic alterations and how this information will effect how she proceeds.

More About the Author

Writing YA...because every teen deserves a hopefully ever after, I take what I've learned from my own life experiences and create characters and stories about the difficulties of walking that line between being a kid and becoming an adult. I've traveled far to get to this point in life, but I'm a happy, healthy person these days, and want to let teens know that no matter how bad life gets, it can always get better--have hope!

I live in the Berkshires with a dreamy husband, and I've successfully raised two sons who are on their own hero's journey. When I'm not writing and publishing my books, I spend my summers kayaking the lakes and ponds in New England, and my winters snow shoeing in the 6000 acres of woods behind my house...aaahhh, bliss!

Fun facts about me: I have a black belt in karate, sing opera, and can still do a sit spin with the best of them.
