Product Description

From the Manufacturer

WD Caviar SE hard drives are designed to maximize desktop computer performance for activities requiring high-performance storage such as computer gaming, digital video editing, and file server applications. Offering capacities as large as 250 GB and equipped with an 8 MB buffer -- the largest buffer available today in a desktop EIDE hard drive -- the WD Caviar SE family delivers data to users faster than any hard drive in its class. Selected models are available with Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) technology, perfect for noise-sensitive computing environments.

Superior Performance
SE hard drives provide a higher percentage of cache hits and significantly faster time to data than industry-standard 2 MB versions. Within the complex operations of hard drives, the buffer is used to hold the results of recent reads from the disk and also to "pre-fetch" information likely to be requested in the near future. The use of an increased buffer improves the performance by reducing the number of physical accesses to the disk and allowing data to stream from the disk uninterrupted by mechanical operations.

Data Protection Enhancements
Data Lifeguard is an expanded set of data protection features that include shock protection, an environmental protection system, and embedded error detection and repair features that automatically find, isolate, and repair problem areas that may develop over the extended use of the hard drive. With these enhanced data reliability features, the drive can perform more accurate monitoring and error repair and deliver exceptional data security.

Data Lifeguard Tools is a set of software utilities that work in conjunction with the embedded Data Lifeguard features to make hard drive installation, drive management diagnostics, and repair simple and worry-free.

Shock Guard provides outstanding improvements in shock and vibration protection for WD Caviar SE drives. Shock Guard allows instantaneous data protection at high shock values to achieve leading shock specifications.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast, Quiet, Simple, December 23, 2003

In my mind, a good hard drive is one about which there's not much to say.

The hard drive is easy to install. The connectors and jumper positions are all clearly marked on the harddrive itself. When using the master/slave jumpers instead of cable select, it doesn't matter where on the cable the drive is, which makes for good space and cable management in your case. All the connectors fit easily and securely.

This 80GB hard drive is one of the most quiet I've ever owned, which suprised me. At 7200 RPM and with an 8MB cache, it's also quite fast. The speed of formatting suprised me, and with my computer running, you can hardly hear the read/write accesses.

All in all, a good drive, and a good buy. I've bought Western Digital before, and I've never been anything but pleased with them. I look forward to the many years of reliability that I'm sure this drivewill bring.

The product description says, " Data Lifeguard Tools is a set of software utilities that work in conjunction with the embedded Data Lifeguard features to make hard drive installation, drive management diagnostics, and repair simple and worry-free." However, the drive arrived in a plain box with xeroxed instructions and without any software. The instruction pages were jumbled in the wrong order, with some pages upside down. The OEM box was nowhere to be seen. What makes this "caviar" is left to your imaginaton. It should be labelled the "catfish" edition. Needless to say, I am returning it.

I bought a WD drive and it failed after 12 months of light use. WD folks told me it must've been something I did. I was backed up, but lost a lot of irreplaceable baby pictures. They wouldn't do anything, as it was after a year. Buy a Hitachi hard drive, these are total junk and could cause you the same heartache they caused me.
