Western Digital 1 TB SATA III 7200 RPM Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive (WD1003FZEX)

Next-generation desktop performance, designed to intensify your PC experience.

WD Black

For the Gamer…
Smarter than the average drive

Performance and workstation PCs equipped with high-end components often omit vibrations and acoustics that can reduce the precision and performance of your hard drive. Even the best chassis on the market cannot always compensate against this. The new generation of WD Black hard drives feature Vibration Control Technology (VCT) which allows the disks inside the drive to adapt to any mounting problems or vibration conditions that are inside your case, resulting in increased data accuracy, performance and reliability over time. Put simply, this means you can game harder, faster and longer.

For the Enthusiast…
Action meets stable traction

In addition to Vibration Control Technology (VCT), WD Black is also equipped with StableTrac Technology, which secures the motor shaft inside the drive at both ends to help reduce additional system-induced vibrations. StableTrac confidently stabilizes the platters inside, resulting in more accurate tracking in a particular sector during read and write operations and delivers increased performance. (2 TB models and above)

For the Creative Pro…
High resolution for a high definition world

Underlying its athletic stance of performance and capacity, WD Black features a new High Resolution Controller (HRC) with an improved architectural design, resulting in increased data precision across the hard drive. This translates to superior responsiveness evolving your high definition world to the next level.

WD Black Desktop
Product Features

Inspiring performance and capacity
For the creators, the gamers and those that demand the best, we delivered the next generation of hard drives to enlarge your PC playground. The latest WD Black desktop hard drives offer enhanced features that maximize system performance, allowing you to spend more time doing what you love most and less time waiting. WD Black is designed to intensify your PC experience with generous capacity and incredible performance, pushing the boundaries of personalization.

Protecting your moments
The worst thing that can happen during a rendering process is losing data due to power fluctuation or power failure. The new generation of WD Black hard drives is equipped with Corruption Protection Technology (CPT), which helps to protect and limit the potential problem of data loss during power failure or power loss to the hard drive. Overall, Corruption Protection Technology can save you time and money on your project.

Dynamic Cache
WD's dynamic caching algorithm improves performance in real time by optimizing cache allocation between reads and writes. For example, if there's an overwhelming percentage of read traffic as opposed to write traffic, the drive automatically allocates more cache for read data, which reduces congestion and improves overall drive performance.

NoTouch Ramp Load technology
The recording head never touches the disk media ensuring significantly less wear to the recording head and media as well as better drive protection in transit.

The WD advantage
WD puts our products through extensive Functional Integrity Testing (F.I.T.) prior to any product launch. On average, each new product goes through 600,000 hours of testing. WD also has a detailed Knowledge Base with more than 1,000 helpful articles. You can also call toll-free support 7 days per week in the U.S. and Canada. See the WD Support site for full details.

Upgrading your drive is easy
WD Acronis TrueImage, available as a free download on the WD Support site, enables you to copy all your data to a new drive so you don't have to reinstall your operating system to get all the benefits of a new drive.

I decided to replace my primary drive in my Windows 7 PC with a 500GB SSD. I had two 1TB factory hard drives currently in my machine and I was using the SSD as my C Drive. To go along with the SSD, I wanted to replace my old factory drives with a single 2TB drive so that I had equivalent space. I had recently purchased two Seagate 2TB Drives (ST2000DM001 - Fast 2 Platter Version) for external backups and media drives. They were fine, but I was looking for a more reliable drive for my internal drive that would get a lot more use. I decided on the WD Black 2TB and opted for the newest WD2003FZEX model. Upon reading several reviews, it seemed like the drive was fast and overall a good drive, but there was a question of how noisy the drive was. I decided to test out the drive in a USB 3.0 Docking Station to see how fast and how loud it was. Attached to this review is a video of my results.

In the video, I am running a speed test and recording the sound with my iPhone 5 to see how loud the drive is. During the speed test, which has sequential and random tests, I move the phone closer to the drive to be able to hear the sound better. At the end of the video, I show two CrystalDiskMark speed tests. The test on the left is of the Seagate 2TB Drive and the test on the right is of the WD Black 2TB Drive.

Speed Test Results - As you can see from the video, the speed of the WD Black Drive (test on the right) is pretty amazing with results of 170MB/s from a USB 3.0 Hard Drive Dock using a 500MB test size. When compared to the cheaper Seagate Drive (test on the left with a respectable 148MB/s), the speed is significantly faster, so you really get what you pay for in this case.

Size Name: 2 TB Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I have used WD black and RE4 (now just RE) drives for many years. I've probably used more than 100 in my desktops and light use servers and that many again in client desktops/servers. My overall experience has been excellent and this drive, so far, is no exception.

After a week with the WD2003FZEX my first impressions are below. I'll update the review as I've lived with the drive for a while and share what I learn.

I installed the WD2003FZEX 2TB WD Black drive into a Dell T7500 Precision Workstation. It is being used for data and is not the boot drive which is a Seagate 600 series SSD that is very fast but power hungry for a SSD: good for desktops, not as much for laptops/tablets.

I tried both the built-in SATA2 and an add-in card with SATA3. In all cases Installation was painless and uneventful. The different interfaces did not yield dramatically different results.

To get an handle on how this drive's performance changes from the last version I ran some tests on this drive and a older Caviar Black 750 GB SATA III 7200 RPM 64MB - WD7502AAEX for comparison.

In running casual tests (copying large files, directories of small files, etc.) I got some general impressions of the drive:

1) In both large files and small file copies to/from the FZEX outperforms the older AAEX but mostly shines with small file/random access. I believe the improvement for small file/random access is close to 10%. Some of this might be the dual processor and improved caching over older versions.

This is a review of the Western Digital 2 TB SATA III 7200 RPM 64 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive, Black, WD2003FZEX.

This is part of the "Black" desktop series. WD Black drives feature a dual core processor that offers twice the processing power to maximize drive performance. According to the manufacturer specs, this 7200 rpm drive has a 64MB cache, advanced format 4K sectors, 6GB/s interface. WD Black drives come with a 5-year limited warranty (vs the Blue drives, which come with only two years). In brief, this is a very good/excellent hard disk drive.

From what I've seen with this drive, I would not hesitate to use it as a performance or data drive. It is fast enough to run the OS, and large enough to store tons of data files. Don't expect break-neck speeds, and certainly don't compare it with solid-state drive (SSD) performance, and you will be quite pleased with this drive.

Overall, highly recommended.

(Warning: Geek alert!!!)

I tested an OEM version of this drive, and not a retail package (boxed with cables, screws, etc.) on my workstation PC. First thing I did was format it to NTFS using PartedMagic (multiple partitions).

Using CDM 3.0.1 and HD Tach as benchmarking tools, I got the following specs:
Average Read - 107 MB/s
Sequential Read - 133 MB/s
Average Write - 115 MB/s
Sequential Write - 117 MB/s

I'm not sure why I was getting relatively "low" benchmark values. Clearly, these benchmark numbers are impressive.
