High performance enterprise SATA drives designed specifically for business-critical applications. ![]() |
Massive capacity- WD RE3 Enterprise SATA drives are available in capacities up to 1 TB.
Dual processor - Twice the processing power results in a 20% performance improvement over the previous generation.
StableTrac - The motor shaft is secured at both ends to reduce system-induced vibration and stabilize platters for accurate tracking during read and write operations.
RAFF - Our fourth generation RAFF technology includes sophisticated electronics to monitor the drive and correct both linear and rotational vibration in real time for up to a 60% performance improvement in high vibration environments over the previous generation of drives
IntelliSeek - Calculates optimum seek speeds to lower unnecessary power consumption, noise, and vibration.

Multi-axis shock sensor - Automatically detects the subtlest shock events and compensates to protect the data.
RAID-specific, time-limited error recovery (TLER) - Prevents drive fallout caused by the extended hard drive error-recovery processes common to desktop drives.
Third generation dynamic fly height - Each read-write head’s fly height is adjusted in real time for optimum reliability.
Thermal extended burn-in test - Each drive is put through extended burn-in testing with thermal cycling to ensure reliable operation.
NoTouch ramp load technology - The recording head never touches the disk media ensuring significantly less wear to the recording head and media as well as better drive protection in transit.
Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) - WD RE3 drives utilize PMR technology to achieve even greater areal density, reliability, and design margin.
Ideal For
Servers, storage arrays, video surveillance, and other demanding write-intensive applications.

I bought 5 units of the 1T RE3 drive for a RAID-5 set. Works great. Less heat than the black drives it replaced. The RE3 is better suited to RAID applications than standard drives which can drop off the raid set unexpectedly.

So, I bought 3 of these recently for a RAID-0 in my Tyan S2915-E MoBo, and I would constantly keep getting errors in Nvidia Mediashied saying that the array was going to fail soon. Long story short, the problem was from both ends, the NVidia driver on XP X64 and one of the disks being bad. one think I'll tell right now is that You absolutely must run the WD test utility to ensure the health of the drives as soon as you recieve them to avoid any confusion. There was a point when I thought my Mobo was bad. Amazon was super cool for sending me a replacement without even waiting for me to send in my faulty drive unit. Performace is definitely great as I am running all three as a 3-way striped RAID-0 Array. To rate these drives as a single drive is useless, for that you have the black edition drives anyway. the RE3 is for RAID and I think rating their RAID performance should be the only performance review.

These drives are just over-priced Caviar Black drives. Unfortunately, you must pay the extra sixty bucks if you need RAID capable drives. WD has disabled TLER on the Caviars that is required in a RAID environment. If you don't plan on setting up an array, don't waste your money on these. Up until late last year Caviars supported TLER by a software switch but I guess WD needed a gimmick to make more money without actually doing anything.
I read complaints about packaging. I bought two of these. Both were suspended in cusioned cradles in separate boxes placed together into another. They were well, if not over, protected. 2115|RDWNQT1C7CPS;2115|RMWZ464QMC97E;2115|RR6R86CN8XZOZ;
