This is a decently fast drive that runs a bit warm with little spindle (motor) noise.

It is NOT "whisper quiet" as it has plenty of audible seek noise when accessing the drive. Unlike some other brands, there is no Acoustic Level Adjustment software available to reduce seek noise. This is really only a concern for Silent PC enthusiasts, as most PCs cooling fans will drown out the seek noise.

Curiously, the similar WD3200KS is much quieter. Or at least my particular one is.

The most important quality in a hard drive to me is that it lives a very long time.

The lifespan of this drive (spent in a file server, running non-stop with maybe 2 or 3 cold reboots) was from February 2006 to June 2009, or about 40 months.

My complaint about this drive is that it didn't last as long as I would have liked it to, though I acknowledge the possibility that this case is a fluke.

I bought this HD about 18 months ago and haven't had any issues with it. Fast and reliable for and excellent price when I bought it. Absolutely recommended

I love these hard drives! They have a decent capacity and excellent performance for the price. I bought several for a Raid array and external backup

This is a great drive. Make sure before you install it that your mother board will accept the speed at witch this drive runs. I have to call ASUS to verify. Anyway if you have to slow the drive for your mother board you will have to place a jumper on pins 5 and 6 to cut the speed in half. After I did that the board saw the drive and the rest is history. This is a great drive and very quick that I can attest to. My other drive in this PC is a 80 gig WD IDE and I never had any problems out of it either. So trust the drive pick it up and use it you won't be sorry.

It is a nice drive, but no cables. I had to go out and buy a cable before I could start work!

This was an OEM version that contained no support software. This was not
a problem as it was easily obtained thru WD's website. Product installed
easily and was up & running in minutes. I set it up as part of a dual
boot system and I've had no trouble so far.

Easy installation. At first, it was louder than the hard drive it replaced (a Maxtor hard drive that had broken). I think that the noise has vanished, though. Either that or, when I later replaced the motherboard, what increased CPU-fan noise, it just masked this hard drive's noise. I rather doubt that latter possibility, though, because the seek noise was rather clicky, and so I don't think fan noise would mask it this well. Anyway, the hard drive has been working well for over two years now---and, at least in my computer, I don't hear it.

Plugging this device into my computer has made worlds of difference. My children now behave, my weekends are always sunny and, best of all, nigerian e-mail scams have been eradicated from my inbox forever. Highly recommended.

Installed with no problem. Using it for backup files. quick access to files.
