5.0 out of 5 stars Cool, Quiet and Reliable!
The biggest killer of hard drives is heat. If there is no air flow around the drive, the drive risks certain failure. That said, I have 2 of these running 24/7 in a home-theater PC in a raid-0 array. They are fast and quiet. They have been running continuously for over a year, and no hiccups. 160GB is small by today's standards, but the beauty of this design is that the...

While I didn't purchase these drives from Amazon, I thought I would pass along my experience in the event it helps others make an informed decision. Our company recently performed a tech refresh on a little under 1000 computers. About half of the new computers have this Western Digital hard drive, the other half have a Seagate Barracuda 160 GB SATA drive. Within a month...

The biggest killer of hard drives is heat. If there is no air flow around the drive, the drive risks certain failure. That said, I have 2 of these running 24/7 in a home-theater PC in a raid-0 array. They are fast and quiet. They have been running continuously for over a year, and no hiccups. 160GB is small by today's standards, but the beauty of this design is that the drive is spinning just one single platter. If you were to go to the 320 GB or larger drive, then you will have multiple platters spinning inside the enclosure, resulting in higher heat and noise.

Within a month of the new computers being deployed, we are getting an average of 3 failed hard drives a week - all are the Western Digital 160 GB model # WD1600AAJS. The numbers seem too great to be the expected "infant mortality rate" for new hardware one might expect from +/- 500 new computers. All failures are being quickly replaced by the manufacturer since they are under warranty, but the amount of dead hard drives showing up on a regular basis has made me very wary of this model. BTW, no failed Seagate drives have been reported thus far.

1.0 out of 5 stars Replaced 3 in a year. ., February 6, 2008
This review is from: Western Digital 160 GB Caviar Blue SATA 7200 RPM 8 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive WD1600AAJS (Personal Computers)
I had 3 die in the span of one calendar year. As a teacher, all I do is internet, word processing, Powerpoints and download a little music here & there. Yes, the hard drives were replaced by WD under warranty, but I spent $500 in PC repairs & data recovery in 2007. WD sends you a reconditioned hard drive and not a new one. I will never buy WD again and their QC department should be ashamed of themselves. I recommend Seagate.

I'm not a blind fan of Western digital.... however, it has been my experience that Western Digital drives often out last the machine and are upgrade as a result of software and user demands rather than failure of the component it self... all in all Western Digital strives for what most manufactures strive for quality and failure after 3 years or more is not bad for a component though ever tries to squeeze the life out of an investment.
Access times are often more about a person personal preferences and end use of the user.....heavy data folks and gamers might find the 8MB cache a little small to their liking Also the price per GB is less with the WD typically. making it a decent investment if you are considering up grading or expanding your system.

It worked from day 1 and more than 3 years later has not skipped a beat. Bought 2 of these for a server in a RAID setup and still going without any glitches without any shutdowns either

It is the human side of this equation that doesn't quite 'get it', but the HDD works great. I've finally taught myself how to make a raid and it picked that up right away. No complaints.

My favorite Hard Drive. I got one of these in all four systems I own. Cheap and reliable. Not a lot of storage space, but I don't need a lot. One in a HTPC, one in each of my gaming PCs and one in my voice communication server PC.
