Good drive, easy install,

This review is from: Western Digital 120 GB EIDE Hard Drive with 8MB Cache (Personal Computers)
I bought this drive to replace a smaller, slower drive. I installed the new drive as master and the old one as a slave, and rebooted using the included Data Lifeguard software. Formatting and partitioning was a snap, and there's a utility for copying the contents of one partition to another. Once that was done I could boot off of the new drive and not have to re-load any software. The only quibbles I have: The drive didn't come with spacers/rails to fit a 3.5" device in a 5.25" slot, so I had to make a trip to the store for that. Also, copying the partition took about 4.5 hours for 14.3 GB. My PC is an HP Pavilion w/ 1.2 gHz. Athlon and 512 MB RAM.

The WD1200JB is the drive that was included in my PC when I bought it in early 2002. Trouble free operation, and quiet. After 2 years with my PC running 24 hours a day seven days a week, the drive motor began to whine- not bad for 2 years running constantly. I just replaced it with a new WD1200JB. Installation and data transfer was simple with the Data Lifeguard software. Note: If your PC is not set up for a 2nd drive, then this kit is for you. If your PC is set up for a 2nd drive- then all you need is the bare disc (no cable, no screws, no software) However, Data Lifeguard is a free download from Western Digital

Lack of Support for Failed Drives,

Lack of Support for Failed Drives
Western Digital will not support your hard drive WHEN it fails. On November 16, 2004, I bought a 250GB hard drive. Three months later in February, 2005, I had to return it for a replacement due to a hard failure. Now, this replacement drive too has failed as well after only eight months. I went through two Western Digital drives in a year due to no fault of my own and the hard drive failed just six days after the warranty expiration. I requested a replacement from Western Digital and they completely ignored me. Buy at your own risk.

If you are planning to buy this product, I suggest you to buy one more HD from another company. Because, this is the most un-reliable product I bought in recent years. I used it for 8 months and all of sudden it stopped working (It was always in the stationary position, yet no body knows why It failed) when I needed the most. WD is willing to repair it but at the cost my valuable data. (The other internal hard drive on my old PC, which I have been using since 98 is still working fine). I would never buy another Western Digital product.
One of my friends, had the similar problem just after 4 weeks of his purchase, unfortunately, he had to format his PC due to other reasons, and now his back-up and the source is gone too!

Bought this drive back in 2003 because of a great rebate deal and the preformance of my old WD hard drive. Three years later after a couple power outages(note pc is plugged into surge protector)drive failed(read\write errors and 80% of data losted) was able to recover and move most of data drive lost with a seperate software. wrote zeros to drive and reformatted, drive worked for two more weeks before completely failing, now it is totally useless. Overall a decent drive with a short life span. make sure you have at least a 3 year warranty if purchasing this drive.

Stay away from this drive, even though it's cheap! They are known for having bad sectors and eventually just failing (especially the 120GB model).I have one, and I lost all my data (I know I should've backed up my files) due to this hard drive. Go with a Maxtor, Segate, anything but this drive.

Please be advised to stay away from this drive. I have lost very important work as it crashed, replaced with another and it crashed again. Please be aware Fudjitsu Pc's use these drives so if you have one please change it before you start developing problems.
Very poor.

So Far, So Good,

Western Digital Hard Drives have a long time excellent reputation, the other panning reviews here notwithstanding. We just bought three and all arrived in good shape and work flawlessly. They are exceptionally quiet and go like a bat out of you-know-where. Only time will tell whether they will stand up. We expect they will. Addendum: They are all still working great in October, 2008.

After all the bad reports from these reviews and the many customer reviews on the circuit city website http://www.circuitcity.com/rpsm/oid/71459/rpem/ccd/productDetailReview.do Many of which involve quotations like "The drive started to spark" or "It simply caught on fire" I think I'll just stay away from this drive.
