2.0 out of 5 stars How could I be so unlucky?
I had to get my internal hdd replaced and was given this. Within 2 weeks it was giving me a message about smart failure. So I had it replaced. Four months later, I'm getting smart failure messages again. What's up with that. :| I don't know if WD will replace it for me, but I guess I'll have to call and check.

(I also had to pay a *lot* more for...

4.0 out of 5 stars Whisper quite and OK fast, August 23, 2010

This 160GB WD drive was an upgrade for my 4-yr old 80GB Fujitsu drive that was still working well, but too small. Upgrade was a pain -- not because of WD drive, but because Dell's piece-of-crap MediaDirect software got in the way, inexplicably truncating the larger 160GB drive down to 80GB. Can you believe it? I'll spare you the details, but had to dig deep to find a workaround on the TechHandbook website that allowed me to re-set the new drive to its full 160GB capacity and permanently disable MediaDirect (which I never used, anyway) so that it stopped getting in the way. (Dell's website was no help.) Used Acronis software to clone the old drive onto the new one. Beyond that adventure, the WD drive works great so far -- it is whisper quite, but not noticeably faster than my 4-yr old Fujitsu. Feels good to have some breathing room on my hard drive, and I hope it holds up as well as the problem-free old Fujitsu.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great upgrade for older laptops, July 19, 2010

Great replacement or upgrade for PATA/IDE/EIDE drives in older laptops. Quiet and fast.

I've used these to upgrade drives and replace failing drives. HINT: buy/borrow an external drive enclosure, put the new drive in the enclosure, use Clonezilla ([...]) to copy the entire old drive's data (including multiple OS's, diagnostic partitions, etc) to the new drive, then replace the old drive with the new one and just boot up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Western Digital HD replacement, April 16, 2010
This review is from: Western Digital 160 GB Scorpio PATA Mobile Internal Hard Drive WD1600VERTL (Blue) (Personal Computers)
I used this drive to update a Toshiba Satellite L25 (5yrs old) from 40GB to 160GB. The drive is quiet, quick and has no problems so far. (2 months). I use the computer for field work so it fly's carry-on 80 times a year. The new drive has been on 8 trips so far with no problems. The drive comes with no instructions so beginners beware. Apricorn EZ Gig II software was used to clone the drive. Install time for the new drive was about an hour, including cloning, with the old drive being used as an external backup. Apricorn provided the aluminum case for the old drive in the install kit. One thing the WD drive could have had was cloning software to make the install easier but the new drive is in and it works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Silent and Cool, December 12, 2010

This replaced a failed HD in my old PowerBook G4, had few options for new PATA notebook drives and Amazon had the most reasonable price. Read/Write noise is low and this drive runs cooler than the former 60GB Toshiba it replaced. I'll agree with other reviews, pricey compared to SATA but on the flip side better to bring new life to an old notebook than toss it.

Performed as expected. No instructions or software provided (but none needed for experienced PC jockey). Suggest free software called Easeus (try download.com) to copy old drive data and operating system to new one and it will work just like your old one but bigger and faster.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Replacement Drive, Though A Little Small, October 28, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Western Digital 160 GB Scorpio PATA Mobile Internal Hard Drive WD1600VERTL (Blue) (Personal Computers)
I bought this drive to replace a similar, slightly larger drive in my Fit-PC Slim that died due to overheating. This was the cheapest PATA notebook hard drive I could find at the time. It works well, and it is quiet and doesn't generate too much heat. 5200 RPM is not has fast as 7200 RPM, but the slower speed lends itself to less noise and heat. My only buyer's remorse is that 160 GB does not seem like a big enough drive, when only an additional $20 or so could buy a 250 GB drive.

Brand new 160GB WD Scorpio PATA Mobile HD for a grand total of $33.49, this may have been my best hard drive deal ever. It gave my ancient Latitude C640 some new life because the factory 40GB joint just wasn't cutting it anymore.

I didn't purchase this drive to replace the one in my computer. I did purchase it to replace my backup drive. Since a notebook computer won't hold two drives, I can't run a RAID for redundancy. However, Apricorn has a software program that comes with their hard-drive upgrade kit called "EZGig II" with the function of cloning a drive bit-for-bit so you can upgrade to a larger drive without losing any data. I use this software to back-up my drive. Recently my hard-drive crashed, so I popped in the spare from the external drive which I have been cloning every Friday. It popped into the computer and within 5 minutes I was up and running. This new drive will now become the back-up in the external enclosure. It works like a champ.

5.0 out of 5 stars Last of the PATA sellers., August 17, 2010

This review is from: Western Digital 160 GB Scorpio PATA Mobile Internal Hard Drive WD1600VERTL (Blue) (Personal Computers)
Until recently, I have been purchasing all my PATA hard drives from Best Buy since their store is nearby. Now that I can only buy one size (too big for my needs) I have been forced to seek another outlet for my ongoing needs. eBay is too expensive when you compare the prices I found here at Amazon. For the same price most sellers on eBay sell their 40 gb hard drives I can get a 120 or 160 gb hard drive at Amazon. You keep stocking them and I'll keep buying them!!!!
