If you're familiar with the previous Raptor drives, you have an idea of the amazing performance delivered by WD's enterprise drives.

One word of caution though: The models ending in GLFS, such as this one, have the SATA connector in a nonstandard location. That makes this unsuitable for RAID arrays, Mac Pros, Dells with fixed-position ribbon connectors, etc. Look for the model ending in HLFS for a model with slightly inferior cooling, but with standard backplane-friendly cable positioning.

EXPENSIVE AND PRONE TO FAILURE. Known firmware problems result in drive failure in 49.7 days of usage. WD recommends a cold power down of the computers containing the drive every 30 to 45 days. The issue results from problems in the TLER and FIS firmware programing. The error occurs when someone is reading or writing to on the 49.7th day of operation. The result is all drives fail simultaneously during a data read or write resulting in total RAID failure and data corruption.

Know bad VelociRaptor drives:

WD3000BLFS-01YBU0
WD1500BLFS-01YBU0
WD740BLFS-01YBU0
WD3000HLFS-01G6U0
WD1500HLFS-01G6U0
WD740HLFS-01G6U0

WD has been very slow to replace these drives probably due to the overwhelming number of failures. We were back ordered on RMAs for weeks with downed servers. WD has been poor to recall known defective WD3000 drives and replace them. Also WD has not alerted Systems Integrators and VARs to the problem.

Odd, I ordered the GLFS, because it was the only version offered on Amazon in brand new retail box. I'm a little insecure of OEM prods for HD.

I received it a few days ago, and just got done installing it. As I was installing it, I noticed that it did not match the images for this listing, which shows the placement of the SATA to be in dead center. To my "pleasant" surprise, it was the HLFS version with the conforming SATA standard placement of the SATA and power cable on the back (coulda shortened this but forgot the 2 word that describes this feature). I checked the box again and confirmed, it does say GLFS. So, I'm wondering if WD got with the program or they're reusing the unused retail boxes of the less popular model? I'm still scratching my head about it...

I'm not too thrilled about the reports of overheating issues with the conforming version, but I was prepared for this and got a nice Silverstone Case with huge amounts of positive airflow to go with my build.

Anyways, hope this info helps those looking for retail boxed versions of the Velociraptors.

Haven't powered it up yet. Will update as things progress.

I use my computer to process photographic images and to enhance the speed of the process I locate the cashing files on a fast hard drive. Until solid state hard drives become common, the fastest hard drives turn at a fast speed, i.e. 10,000 rpms. I purchased this hard drive for the speed and also for a size larger than the one I replaced. The installation was easy and the operation of the drive in photo image processing has been flawless thus far. It has been in use by me for approximately 30 days and I am very happy that I made the purchase.

Ordered the retail drives, received in good condition in the retail boxes(from J&R Computer world). Drives have no errors, run cool, and quiet. All programs load very quickly, and windows loads amazingly fast. All in all, excellent drives, a big THANK YOU to WD for these little gems!

Noticeabaly faster than old 7200 rpm drive, especially on boot-up and application launch. But worth the $1.00 per gigabyte for the slightly faster speed, I think not, unless you're one of those that has to have the very best, like me.

Evaluating a hard drive is fairly easy; does it do what it is supposed to do? Is it reliable? In this case, the answer is yes, and maybe. The drive works fine, is lightning fast, and performs as expected. My Vista boot time dropped about 20 seconds when booting from this drive, which is pretty impressive.

However, when cloning my current Seagate 500gb drive to this one, I found very many bad sectors on the drive. There were so many that I was ultimately forced to do a 'ignore all' just to get the cloning finished. That many bad sectors on a brand new drive is really annoying and simply not acceptable. I'll be returning the drive for a replacement, and will update this review once it's been received.

This drive appears to be exactly the same as Western Digital WD3000GLFS 10K 3.5-Inch 300GB SATA Velociraptor Hard Drive which is an OEM product that is listed at the same price, and with no notification that it is OEM. If you're buying one, make sure you get the retail package (assuming they stay the same price).

In conclusion, this is a fast drive, but I have no choice but to leave it an average review based on the bad sectors. Your mileage may vary, and if you get one of these with no bad sectors, you will likely love this drive.

I don't have test equipment and since I was reloading all new software I did not have the benefit of a known system that I could compare the feel of a single component change. Never the less I did my homework before choosing this to purchase the WD Raptor and I have never seen programs load as fast or files transfer with such speed as I have while using this Hard drive. In fact I purchased a second unit for this same computer. One for the programs and operating system. The second for all my work related files, photos, video and such. The Raptor line of hard drives is a good choice for those who want a noticeable improvement in the speed of their computer system.
