While it says new, bare drive, it was not in a Western Digital ESD bag.

If you punch the serial number in HP's warranty lookup you get a message saying no warranty here check with HP.

The drive I received looked to be in new condition, and it probably was. However, it had been repackaged in an ESD bag. While it says new, bare drive, it was not in a Western Digital ESD bag. All WD bags have their logo on them, and are notched so you can tear them open. This bag had a bad, crooked heat seal across a generic ESD bag. Looking closer, I noticed the date on the drive, it was Dec 15th of 2011! I ordered this drive on April 13, 2014.... WD reports the warranty ends on 1/15/2017. I wanted the 5 year warranty, and with my new drive, that warranty was half over already!

I wouldnt trust this drive with my data... not in its current condition. Seller was Oceanside Market, and the drive is being returned. Very shady... assuming they hoped you would tear the bag open, and not read the date on it. Once you open that bag, you are the one stuck holding it.

This is a mfg refurbished drive all 3 of mine had scratches in the same spots. Also my 3 drives had HP stickers on them. these are OEM refurbs. they performed as expected and all appear in good condition. However these drives do NOT have a 5 year warranty. If you punch the serial number in HP's warranty lookup you get a message saying no warranty here check with HP. looking any/all numbers up on HP's warranty lookup just generates errors. any warranty at all on these drives would have to come from "GOHARDDRIVE" amazon reseller and all I can say is good luck with that. or even just getting one of these yahoo's on the phone. I am happy that the drives ARE authentic RE4's however however the warranty appears to be false advertising (I had quoted the warranty to customer too and now im SOL if there are problems years down the road)

We have many, many Western Digital HDDs in our office LAN. We do have a few (C-gate) and a few (HIT-achi) as well. No Sam - sung. (Amaz-on hates it when you use brand names.) All things considered, the WD gives us the best longevity (life span). That might seem at first to be a non-valid judgement criteria. Well, in my defense, a HDD loss to me means a potential data loss - as not <everything> is in a RAID and not every thing is contained in a Back-Up.
Disk Cache is RAM memory inside the drive. This particular drive is only SATAII which means (3GB/s) data transfer - or bandwidth, BUT it does have 64MB of Cache. This makes for a good balance in my opinion, because (and I may be wrong) the time from when a processor sends a command and gets its info back isn't solely the SATA speed (3GB/s instead of 6GB/s (SATAIII)).
San-Disk puts it this way; "SATA II (revision 2.x) interface, formally known as SATA 3Gb/s, is a second generation SATA interface running at 3.0 Gb/s. The bandwidth throughput, which is supported by the interface, is up to 300MB/s.
SATA III (revision 3.x) interface, formally known as SATA 6Gb/s, is a third generation SATA interface running at 6.0Gb/s. The bandwidth throughput, which is supported by the interface, is up to 600MB/s. This interface is backwards compatible with SATA 3 Gb/s interface."
So the slow-down is far more likely to be the HDD Actuator Arm waving around the platter so the head can find what it is looking for.
*If this wasn't an issue, why would there be all the fuss and programs about defragging your HDD???*
Look at it this way. A typical disk cache for a 1 terabyte hard drive is 32 megabytes (note this WD has 64MB), while a 2 TB hard drive may have a 64 MB cache.

these are old (my says 2011) hard drives not from the US according to western digital. Seller says they will handle warranty but this information is not provided by them in the description.

I finally used the drive I purchased. SMART says this drive had 500 hours of use on it. So these are not just old they are used.
