Decent Product with Several Quirks,

This review is from: Western Digital WDG1NC7500N My Book World Edition 750GB Ethernet Network Storage System (Personal Computers)
I have some real mixed feelings about this device. The first one I received locked up during a copy and I had to disconnect the power cord to get it reset. Unfortunately, it would never come back to ready after that. The replacement drive will also lock up on occasion but will come back to ready after unplugging & replugging the power cord back in. It seems like large copies of many files and folder levels give the thing a fit at times. It is also painfully slow in transfer speed as many other people have mentioned in reviews here and elsewhere. I contacted support about the lockup problem and they suggested setting a static IP address instead of letting the drive obtain a DHCP address. My initial attempts at setting up the static IP address failed & the drive required a reset to get it back to default DHCP mode and reconnect. I later found that I could set a static IP address below my router's DHCP range of 100-149 but not above. It has been working OK since then.
I do have an issue using the MYBOOKWORLD with the two XP PC's connected on my LAN. If I try to open a JPG file with the Windows viewer and then rotate it, the PC's crash. A VISTA 64 bit machine on the same LAN has no problem whatsoever. One of the XP machines also crashes if I try to rename a file on the MYBOOKWORLD while the other doesn't. I am using native SAMBA access and not MioNet, by the way, as I read that the WD MioNet was a little flaky and unreliable. I'm kind of thinking the whole drive is unreliable though. Anyway, right now it's working, aside from the quirks I ran into, and seems like a decent value for the money.

Expected better!,

The MioNet software is such a hassle to get working correctly and to share the drive with numerous users. The software is not free, just comes with a free trial. The drive does not give you formatting options, and it sometimes heavily uses the network even when no one is accessing it.

Great idea, very poor execution. In spite of the product being "Gigabit Ethernet" enabled, the actual speeds attainable are dismal, on the order of a few megabytes per second. Backing up your data to this drive would take days and days. If it could actually read/write at a reasonable speed (say, 25 Mb/s on a gigabit lan) then it would be fine, but as is, this is a useless product.
ps. the ability to attach an additional drive via a USB port is a great idea!

Overheating, slow, etc.,

This product is a very good idea very poorly executed. There are a couple of major design flaws that have already been brought up.
1: The product overheats very regularly. I just leave it connected pretty much all of the time, but even though I'm not using it or saving anything to it, etc., it is overheated almost every time I look at it. I reset it and it overheats again. That's after updating all the firmware and exhausting all other ideas that I've had to make it right. 2: It is really not easy to access your data on this drive. First, it's pretty slow. Somewhere in the range of 4MBps normally, which for a physical drive is not actually that bad. A lot of people don't realize it I guess, but you really don't need the MioNet software. Either you can go into network and actually just save your stuff in the public folder on the drive or you can go into MioNet online and do that instead. MioNet sucks so I wouldn't recommend installing that. It pops up asking for a password every time I start my computer even though I've uninstalled it.

This worked good for about 4 weeks, setup was easy no real problems there but now it gets so hot that is locks up and also locks my workgroup that no computer can browse the workgroup until I shut it down. A little fan in the case would help out on this drive but it don't have anything.
It would over heat in about 15 minuets so I opened the case up so it would be cooler and it lasts longer, I still have to shut it down once or twice a week to let it cool. That is not working for my network, I need a drive that can run 24/7/365 and stay cool.

So I bought one of these cheap, (refurbed/OEM) for like 75$. The product has a nice look, but based on all the negative reviews I was concerned. Even with minimal use it runs hot and the orientation of the fan doesn't make sense. It blows heat down through the device. I bought a cheap USB powered variable speed fan from amazon, laid that on top pointing down and wella, no heat issues.
Pros: Nice looking Lots of space Mine was cheap Cons: Runs hot unless you take extra steps. Slow, not going to be very fast ever. Other: I didn't use the software for WAN access since I just wanted a local NAS and all the reviews said the software was bad.

This product has many good features. I only recommend a very good network connection otherwise, even a very short loss of connection, may result in a transfer error. This may be a problem when transferring large video files.
