Western Digital 80 GB SATA internal hard drive with cool and quiet operation

These drives now run at a 300 mb transfer rate so a jumper on pins 5 & 6 are needed for SATA 150 users. Other than that they run great and are quiet.

A very fast & quiet hard drive! Don't forget to put pins on jumpers 5 & 6 ! I had to, To get my board to read the drive! Other than that No problems, Super fast, Very quiet and a low price! A drive that is worth buying!

This drive is a SATA-300 hard drive. They (2) replaced IDE drives and the speed is unbelievable. They are noticeably faster and much quieter. As a note, this drive is a 300 SATA drive, so a 300 controller is preferred although not necessary. If the drive is attached to a 150 controller, it will not spin up unless jumpered to a speed of 150. Conversion from IDE to SATA (this is a Windows machine) requires the SATA drivers to be loaded to Windows before the drive is copied.

I got this Hard Drive to replace a WD 80GB that went bad in a clients Dell Optiplex 740 compact desktop (Since the original drive in it was probably well over 3 years old I'm not going to hold it against WD - Western Digital). What I would have done 3 months ago would have been to purchase a bigger drive (like say a 500GB)which would have been $45 dollars at Amazon, however due to the flood damages in Thialand's Hard drive factories which caused hard drives to sky rocket to anywhere between 2 to 3 times its pre september 2011 prices I just went ahead and purchased an exact replacement for the Dell Optiplex.

I got the drive 2 to 7 days earlier than originally promised, replaced the failed drive with the new one, and restored a backup of the clients PC from my clients Windows Home Server (Version 1). Spent the next couple of hours updating security patches, drivers, and applications which during that time you could even barely hear the drive work (very quiet) unlike its predessor which was on the noisy side (Should have been my first clue).

Overall, if your looking for a good hard drive and have to settle for 80GB like replacement due to the sky rocketing hard drive prices of the Thailand Floods then look no further, This hard drive will do the job!

I didn't like because the item came defective, you must review before you send the product if this is working. I lost US$5 for return of the hard drive.

It took a while for the product to be delivered. Other than that, alright.

I received this last week. Upon opening the box, there is only the drive in the packing, exactly as it appears on the photo above. There was NO documentation. I know how to install these, done it many times before. You can go to the Western Digital website and print out a manual if you need to. Also does not come with a SATA cable. However, it does work fine and I have not had any problems after a week of use.

I was surprised at the poor packaging and, returned the drive unused. Other than Amazon's packaging, the drive arrived just shrink wrapped: No manufacturer's package, no set up or installation instructions at all.

I use these drives all of the time and Amazon's price and shipping were comptetive and our normal supplier was out. We ordered two drives which were loosely packed in a box that was crushed on one end. We will be returning these unopened, since who knows what happened to them in transit, sliding around inside the box with two pieces of air pillow packing that were completely ineffective. Books I've received from Amazon have been packed better.

Item was shipped promptyly. Received before date specified. Item currently working well.
