Book Description

0786405945 978-0786405947 October 1999
"The time to live and the place to die. That's all any man gets. No more, no less"-Parson (Hank Worden) in The Alamo. "Look, I don't mean to be a sore loser, but when it's done...if I'm dead...kill him!"-Butch Cassidy (Paul Newman) in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. "Well, there are some things a man just can't run away from"-The Ringo Kid (John Wayne) in Stagecoach. KID: "Why don't we have a drink for old times' sake?" BUTCH: "Old times' sake? That means you got no cash"-Kid Sheleen (Lee Marvin) and Butch Cassidy (Arthur Hunnicut) in Cat Ballou. This is a topically arranged compilation of over 6,000 famous lines and memorable quotes from over 1,000 western films, from the 1920s to 1998. Indexes to actors and actresses, film names and narrow subjects provide instant access for both cowboy fans and western film scholars.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This volume is similar in format to Robert and Gwendolyn Nowlan's Film Quotations (McFarland, 1994), yet there is almost no duplication. Kane's volume contains over 6000 quotations from 1000 Westerns arranged by 41 topics (bad guys, good guys, wild women, women, etc.), with a subject and keyword index and separate name and film indexes. Black-and-white pictures and posters from the Westerns, most occupying at least a quarter of a page, enhance the quotations. A classic is a photograph of James Stewart and Henry Fonda in bed in The Cheyenne Social Club with Stewart's quotation "I'm a cowboy. Always have been always will be." This is definitely a specialized source that would be useful in film collections, yet the quotations reflect American culture--"Common sense has never overwritten Army orders!"--and are enjoyable to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars FUN to read!, December 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Western Movie Quotations (Hardcover)
This compilation of pithy quotations from westerns of my youth is an absolute pleasure to read! Think of the "short & sweet" of all the hilarious, sarcastic, wisecracking, thoughtful, insightful and incisive remarks made by characters in the westerns that we grew up on - without the "filler." This book is like Lay's Potato Chips: "Bet you can't read just one!"
