Western White Pine Seeds, 50 seeds per package, Pinus monticola The Western White Pine is a beautiful landscape pine. It is a fast growing species with bluish-green foliage. Western White Pine is the state tree of Idaho. The Latin name is Pinus monticola, and 'monticola' means "inhabiting mountains. It prefers deep, porous soils and gentle slopes in full sun. Hardiness Zones: 5-7 Size: 50 to 175 feet tall, trunk diameters from 5 to 8 feet, Spread is 20 to 30 feet wide. Foliage (needles):, three to seven inch long, bluish -green needles with a whitish tinge which occur in bundles of 5. Cones are stalked, nearly straight and grow from 5 to 12 inches long Bark: The bark of the mature western white pine is brownish-gray, and is broken into small rectangular blocks. Wood characteristics: fine grain, uniform texture, The name, Western White Pine, comes from the light , creamy-white color of the wood. It is commonly called a soft pine because its wood is soft. Uses: The wood of the western white pine is easily worked with carpenter's tools, and is ideally suited for carving, furniture making, window and door frames, paneling, shelving, and some structural applications. General Care Tips: The Western White Pine favors deep porous soils with medium acidity but will tolerate soils of poorer quality. Seedlings can benefit from partial shade up to five years and full sun thereafter. Western white pines are generally drought intolerant. Western White Pine seeds are very long-lasting and can be stored for several years. Pre-Planting Treatments: Refrigerate seeds at 45 degrees Fahrenheit for at least 2 weeks prior to planting. Soak seeds in water for two days right before planting in soil or potting mixture.
