5.0 out of 5 stars Westie from Head to Tail
I purchased this book 18 years ago when I had my first Westie. Out of all the Westie books I have this book is by far the most informational for new owners as well as seasoned Westie owners. I just got a new Westie puppie this January and went to get my book, which unfortunately was falling apart from overuse. Luckily I found the book on the secondary market. I am...

2.0 out of 5 stars a bum steer from amazon
This is a great book for people who plan to breed West Highland White terriers, but as the owner of a six-month-old Westie I'm finding it worthless with the exception of the author's charming introductory remarks about the breed. There's no practical advice on training and far more advice than any typical pet owner is looking for with respect to breeding and whelping...

5.0 out of 5 stars Westie from Head to Tail, August 21, 2000
This review is from: Westies: From Head to Tail (Hardcover)
I purchased this book 18 years ago when I had my first Westie. Out of all the Westie books I have this book is by far the most informational for new owners as well as seasoned Westie owners. I just got a new Westie puppie this January and went to get my book, which unfortunately was falling apart from overuse. Luckily I found the book on the secondary market. I am anxiously awaiting the updated version coming out this fall. The book is a true winner and to be enjoy by all Westie enthusiasts!!

I purchased the earlier edition of this book many years ago to
use as a guide book in our kennel. We here at Kemperland Kennel use it often. It is underlined and marked and used. There are even Betadine stains on it from being close at hand when we were dealing with an emergency. It has helped us through thick and thin of Westie grooming, health, breeding, puppy raising, etc.

When the author came out with an updated book in 2001, I bought it as well because I didn't want to miss out on ANY of her knowledge and expertise that she had gleaned from working more years with this wonderful breed of dog than I have.
We recommend this book to all of our Westie clients. It will answer your questions and upgrade your knowledge like no other
book on them I have found. It, like the Westie, is the "BEST OF THE BEST".

If your thinking of owning or own a Westie (West Highland Terrier), this is an excellent book that will answer all the questions that you may have in respect to their care, health, breeding, grooming, evaluating, etc. It is a "must read" for all Westie owners

5.0 out of 5 stars All aspects of this charming and popular canine breed, June 6, 2001
In Westies From Head To Tail, Ruth Faherty draws upon her considerable experience and expertise as a former Westie breeder and exhibitor to present a detailed, informative, comprehensive, and descriptive introduction to all aspects of this charming and popular canine breed. Each "reader friendly" chapter is profusely illustrated with black-and-white photography and illustrations. Westies From Head To Tail is essential and rewarding reading for anyone who owns, or is contemplating owning a Westie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Westie Book, February 12, 2000

When I first obtained this book I was skeptical, thinking that this was going to be 'one of those typical Westie books etc.', as I read this book, I found more information in such detail from the beginning clear thru to the end to make me realize that this indeed was not just your typical 'Westie informational book', but a very good detailed, to the point book, loaded with important, knowledgeable information for the new pet owner as well as for the breeder of such a wonderful breed as the West Highland White Terrier. I have enjoyed my copy of this book now for a number of years and I am looking forward to reading the 'New' edition by Ruth Faherty as soon as she is finished with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Westie Bible, August 15, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Westies: From Head to Tail (Hardcover)
If you're only purchasing one book on West Highland White Terriers, this is the one. It is a must read if you're thinking about adding a Westie to your life, or if you're a long-time Westie fancier.

The author covers everything from gooming to genetics with lots of excellent photographs in between

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Westie, August 26, 2005
By
Richard Brennan (Washington, DC USA) - See all my reviews

So many West Highland White Terrier books actually contain only about 50% Westie-specific information - the rest is generic filler. Not so with Ruth Flaherty's classic book - this is 100% Westie! Ruth's passion and knowledge of the breed shows through in every section.

Highlights:

* If you want to learn how to hand strip your dog, the grooming chapter gives you a step-by-step guide.
* The nutrition section doesn't just tell you what to feed your dog, she explains how the various nutrients work together to help you keep your dog's overall diet in balance.
* The breeding section takes you though the whelping process in great detail; just reading through it can help you see what's in store and help you handle any emergencies that come up.

I was very sad to hear of Ruth's death in the spring of 2005. She has left an indelible mark on the Westie community and indirectly helped improve the lives of thousands of dogs. We will miss her.

5.0 out of 5 stars "THE" Westie Book to Have in Your Library, November 13, 2004
Ruth Faherty's book is full of wonderful information and pictures for the Westie lover. It's the only Westie book that covers so much from puppyhood to the golden years of Westies and so much more in between. Is is evident that this breed book was written with a great love and knowledge of this grand little breed. Perhaps in Ruth's next revision, she can bring into the book the exceptional benefits of a raw food diet and discuss the vaccination issues (including the fact that annual booster vaccinations have never been necessary) that would be of great educational benefit to Westie guardians who want to make informed choices so they can help their companions live very, very long and healthy lives.

By
Faith Ann Tice (Victoria, MN USA) - See all my reviews
Whether you are considering a Westie for a companion; the companion of a Westie puppy; or you just love the breed and want to know more, THIS IS THE BEST BOOK ON THE MARKET! The author has put everything you need to know about Westies in a fabulous and enjoyable read. After reading this book you will know if a Westie is the breed for you and your family. Excellent book by a respected authority on Westies, from Head to Tail! Thank you, Ruth, for this labor of love! I raised both of my Westies with your book close at hand! They are now 12 years old and 8 years old and both going strong!
