Confusion over wiring, third-party seller,
By tdogzz (Annapolis, MD) - See all my reviews
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Westinghouse 255706-41P Summit HI-Intensity LED Landscape Lighting Set, 6 Piece (Tools & Home Improvement)
We ordered these lights because we thought they were classy and also atypical, compared with the usual black plastic/iron lights that are popular.Pros: We had previously tried solar lights but between the relatively small amount of sunlight they got (the sun being blocked by a neighbors house and our own leyland cypresses), low amount of light produced and short duration of lighting we were excited to get lights that would be brighter and would stay on the entire time we needed them. Cons: Support: We used them for a few minutes as a test, and again a few minutes more several days later. The second time a bulb was out, after the third time they never lit again. An email to Westinghouse was returned, telling us to contact their American partner. The American partner, International Development Corp, wouldn't support the product once they learned we hadn't bought it through one of their vendors. They referred to New England Charm (an Amazon Marketplace company) as a "third party vendor". New England Charm initially offered to help but did not return email after that initial offer of help. Wiring: the manual warns against using an extension cord. I find this a pretty big shortcoming because 1) this is not mentioned in any of the production description before I bought it and 2) the whole reason I need landscaping lights is to light a path far away from the house, so of course I need an extension cord for it. Unfortunately I didn't see the warning until I was in the midst of trying to troubleshoot the blown transformer. And use an extension cord I did. Since that could likely have caused these problems the support company suggested using 16 or 18-gauge wire to extend the supplied cord. Replacement parts: the transformer uses a non-standard adapter which is not sold separately, so while I could easily purchase a new transformer I would need some electrical expertise to figure out how to connect it to the lights. Summary: these lights could be perfect for some people if you don't need them too far from your power source. For me it appears as if everything that could go wrong, did. With my next landscape lighting purchase I will - stay away from Westinghouse because of their poor support - stay away from Westinghouse because of their use of non-standard, hard-to-replace parts - buy from a major vendor in order to not have the potential for the lack of support - find the product's manual ahead of buying so that I can determine if I'll need to do some wiring from the power source first
