Here in the US, Hans Reffert is probably best known--when he's known at all--for his off and on work with krautrock legends Guru Guru. Even in Germany, his 1987 album Total Normal or his 90s work on the Zauberfinger or Flute & Voice projects aren't easily obtained. So the availability of Westlich Bb9 on Amazon is a rare opportunity to hear more of this elusive guitarist!

Although Reffert plays Hawaiian slide guitar throughout the album, very little of the music is what one might call traditional Hawaiian or even blues music. Instead, the bulk of the tracks are meditative, atmospheric explorations that have more in common with Japanese flute music than most guitar-oriented music. (All but two of the tracks are instrumentals.) Perfect, in fact, for sitting in the shade and sipping a cool drink on a hot summer day...
