Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

With this volume, Ramsay (religion, Bethel Coll.) has updated his Layman's Guide to the New Testament (Westminster/John Knox, 1980), adding sections on the Old Testament and Apocrypha and using the New Revised Standard Version as his text. Three concerns drive his explication: What does the book or passage say? What did it mean when written? What does it mean today? Ramsay handles the first two questions adroitly and wisely avoids sermonizing on the third. His facility with historical and textual criticism is admirable and his honesty regarding the books' value is refreshing. By frequently using the latest archaeological finds, he invites the reader deeper into the text, and his style is so natural that even such reputedly "dry" books as Leviticus and Numbers come to life. One of the finest introductions to the Bible available, this would make an excellent text for an introductory Bible class, a Bible study group, or the lay reader who desires a deeper understanding of the Bible, in part and in its entirety.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Guide to Heaven's Gate, April 20, 2001
By
This review is from: The Westminster Guide to the Books of the Bible (Hardcover)
The Westminster Guide to the Books of the Bible is a wonderful resource for all those that are seeking a greater knowledge of the Bible. Ramsay takes a conservative approach and effectively explains the Bible, book by book, without forcing his personal beliefs down the reader's throat. He does not assume that his reader has a vast knowledge of the Bible and writes in such a way that the book can be easily understood. The author often presents the ideas of several different critical groups while bringing to light historical facts and happenings that support the most widely accepted view. With a greater understanding of ancient customs and tradition as well as an awareness of meanings lost in translation, the common atheist questions and accusations of the Bible's shortcomings are disproved or at least refuted. The Guide addresses the historic validity of the books while also assessing their theological meaning and significance to the Bible as a whole. I highly recommend this book to Christians of all denominations as well as non-Christians; blind faith is commendable in one sense, but let us not be led by ignorance. Ramsay properly states at the beginning and end of his Guide that although he hopes his book will be useful and enlightening, there is no substitute for actually reading the Bible itself.

This is a great book which summarizes in a concise way each book of the Bible. I especially like the clear charts summarizing each Bible book, so you can review in advance what they are about and their outline. I have bought dozens for all my Sunday School teachers, and keep one by my desk when I get ready to teach the Bible.
