Product Description

Hands Down, an Edmund Classic! -- Hand Boilers are looped and twisted glass sculptures containing a liquid that will "boil" as heat is transferred from your bare hand. Simply hold the large bulb end in the palm of your hand and within minutes, your body heat will cause the liquid to rise. - Once out of your hands, it takes a few minutes for the liquid to cool down and return to the large bulb. Pretty fascinating science toy and an excellent demonstration of energy transfer. Comes in three different colors: blue, green and red - let us pick one for you.

We got this handboiler for our 9 year old son on his birthday. He is very interested in science so we thought he'd get a kick out of this. You place the base of the boiler in the palm of your hand, wrap your fingers around it and seconds later the liquid travels up the tube and starts boiling in the top. It is a pretty cool trick that all his brothers wanted to try. It is something that is fun to do over and over again. The only downside is that it is thin glass and extremely fragile. Do not buy for very young children.

I bought these as a gift for a counselor who works with high school students. The kids get to play with stuff in the counseling office while there and they find it a pretty nice place to be. As a result, they visit more, talk more, and find good results there. The hand boilers are a bit fragile (one broke within a day) but they kids think they are great!

I used to have a pen that had a little hand boiler attached to it, and have been wanting a replacement lately. Rather than pay too much for that, I decided to give these a try. On looking around a bit, maybe I should have just purchased Aqua Bubble Pen instead. Matches my old one.)

The biggest downside of this toy is that you get whichever model is sent to you. That could mean a very interesting boiler, or a very plain one. Unfortunately, I received what I would consider to be the plain one. The one with green liquid in the picture. I understand these are cheap items, and it is partially due to you not getting a choice, but I was still a bit bummed about that.

Beyond that, it is a hand boiler. The glass feels a little flimsy, and it looks like it could tip very easily. A sturdy base to hold it would have been nice.

If there are better hand boilers around the same price range, I haven't found them. It is a neat desk toy, at least until a cat sends it crashing to the ground.

My review is little different than those that precede. The inappropriate container ("Love Thermometer") arrived in good condition (somewhat miraculously since it is so fragile). Because it has no secure stand or holder and because it is made of very thin glass, it is very prone to tipping over. When my four year old saw it, she was amazed by the "boiling" purple water (the color selection was just fine by me). After a few minutes, we put it down on a table. An hour later, an accident struck since it was so unobtrusive that someone didn't realize it was there (not my daughter, however). It fell to the floor and shattered. What prior reviews do not mention is that whatever the liquid contents were, they go right into wooden floors and instantly stain with a permanency that is unbelievable. We'll definitely have to resand the living room floor to get the stain removed. If anybody knows the contents and an "antidote" for my floor, I would appreciate a posting.

I loved these when I was a child. The heat from your hand makes the liquid bubble and move up the glass coils. However, I've ordered twice from two different sellers and both have arrived shattered because they were not properly packaged. I had to get a refund both times from amazon. I have now ordered from a different seller and will send them a message or call them to PLEASE package this delicate glass carefully! If I were to get one that wasn't shattered, it's going to be awesome!!

The "hand boiler" I ordered to give as a Christmas gift arrived broken. Haven't yet arranged to send it back -- not sure it's worth the hassle for a few bucks. Beware!

Came in a box titled "Love Thermometer" and could hear the broken pieces when I took it out of the box. Save your money; get something else. Not a "Pretty fascinating science toy" for anyone under the age of 16.
