Book Description

December 2002

Wetlands combine the beauty of both aesthetic form and ecological function in a way that few other landforms can match.

This book explores the creation, restoration, enhancement, and construction of designed wetlands. It provides a practical guide for wetland design on a local site-specific scale, as well as reviews the impact of wetland design projects on the environment. More than 150 key principles and practices of wetland design and planning are presented, accompanied by detailed illustrations, and case studies demonstrate the successful application of these design principles for landscape architects and land-use planners. Especially suited to a graduate level and early professional readership, this is the first book to explore both the ecological function and art of wetlands design. 225 illustrations

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Focuses on specialized scientific material on wetlands in a way which will readily allow design professionals to apply the principles in their individual practices.” (Southeastern Naturalist )

“Principles of wetland-watershed planning are explained succintly and clearly...one of the few works written primarily for landscape planners and designers, the book distills technical information into practical points and presents a good selection of important case studies.” (James Wescoat, ASLA, and David Kovacic - Landscape Architecture )

This review is from: Wetland Design: Principles and Practices for Landscape Architects and Land Use Planners (Hardcover)
I was looking for a book that would be a good introduction to created wetlands, particularly treatment wetlands - something a little less massive than the recent tome by Kadlec and Wallace. This book wasn't what I was looking for. Although it covered the basics, (and had lots of design diagrams) the organization of the book is awful. It looks like the author just shoved a bunch of power-point presentations together and got it published. Even the numerous diagrams weren't much use, as most of them lacked information on scale and virtually all of them lacked information on loading rates, hydrology, etc. The theoretical considerations presented are also presented in such a general way as to be pretty much useless. There are a lot of case studies in the book, but I didn't get around to reading them. Overall, this book was light on the "principles" mentioned in the title. It might be worth $30, but I'm not convinced.
