The Wetlands Textbook,
By dragondazd (Portland, OR United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wetlands (Hardcover)
I first picked this book up to consider a career as a wetland scientist (among other things) and instantly dove into the heaps of information provided. It is well written and easy to read with nicely labelled sections. I found that it had all sorts of information on the subject. It is highly useful. To date, this is THE book to get in the field. If you get any book on the subject, this is it. I was only mildly surprised after reading through much of it to find that it's the only textbook in my graduate class on wetland ecology and management and there appears to be no competition as a textbook. In short, it's very readable and immensely useful: A combination you can't go wrong with.

There is no better book for learning about wetlands that I have found. Many students find hydrology difficult, but this book lays this critical process out clearly, with excellent illustrations and diagrams.
This book helps the biotic oriented student understand the abiotic processes in clear and simple language. I will never part with my copy, and reference it often!

Wetlands is a very useful resource,
This review is from: Wetlands (Hardcover)
This book is very helpful in understanding the various aspects and dynamics relating to wetlands. It includes management, legal, and various other topics of importance to wetland biologists, wildlife students or researchers working in wetland delineation or consultation.

Good for learning the basics quickly,
This review is from: Wetlands (Hardcover)
This is a good book for the brand new person to wetlands, or the intermediate person who needs a refresher. I am the latter, and I have found that there are new insights or anecdotes in this book that I never knew. Also, I like the figures.
I'm a fan of pictures, and there are not many of those...

The Bible for Wetland Researchers,
This review is from: Wetlands (Hardcover)
This book is a must have for all wetland researchers, managers, scientists, and anyone with a general interest in wetland ecosystems. If I had to choose 1 wetland book, this is it. It is one of THE most popular textbooks for university wetland courses and workshops. I have been a wetland scientist for almost 15 years, and this is one of the books I use on a regular basis, and recommend to all my assistants and students. Wetland researchers will also want to keep in mind that with the release of the 4th edition, this 3rd edition is still a must have in your wetland library. The 4th edition removed all the wetland ecosystem specific chapters that are in this edition, so this edition is far from outdated. Don't choose one over the other! Buy them both :).

Great price because it is not the newest edition, but i think it acutally is better than the newer edition. For those who care about their students and their wallets this is the version to suggest! Nothing about it is out of date, and there is plenty of great things about the content and organization.

I purchased this book for a college class called "Wetland Environments", but it is so much more than just a textbook. It's easy to understand and very informative regarding all things wetlands. I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the topic or natural ecosystems and wildlife management in general.

An Excellent Resource on Wetland Sciences!,
By Geoffrey (Redmond, WA USA) - See all my reviews

This resource would be considered the "Bible" of wetland sciences. It is highly valuable for understanding the ecological systems involved in a wetland. A must for wetland regulators, scientists, and just interested people!

Comprehensive, but with editing errors and other bad stuff.,

I figured this book would be interesting, given that it is required for one of my core classes on a topic which interests me. The book so far has failed to satisfy that one point, although it is incredibly thorough. Over all, it is a nice textbook, better than a couple I've read, but not the best. There are two main problems with this textbook. First of all, there are editing errors. I understand that it is a long piece of work, but there were places where the sentence structure was so messed up, I had to reread it several times before I realized that it simply didn't make any sense. Secondly, the author likes to beat topics to death with case study examples, often coming to the conclusion that nothing can be concluded because there are conflicting results from the studies. If I wanted a literature review, I'd get one. Of course, If you're a student, you really have no choice to buy this do you? But if you are the professor, consider writing a book that is easier to understand and publish it yourself (after first getting a good editor). Fellow students, just do what you normally would do, and skip the parts about Jenny, Smithy, Blowharderbeck, et. al. 19xx study and read the summary sentences at the end.

Extremely useful,

Mitsch and Gosselink have written an excellent text/reference book on wetland ecology and management. The book is perfect as a text for a wetlands ecology course in upper level or graduate courses. I use it as a reference that I pull from the shelf again and again.
