2.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Rare Repertoire, August 31, 2001

This review is from: Wetz: Symphony No. 3 (Deutsche Romantiker, Vol. 1) (Audio CD)
This very interesting composer can be had with all 3 symphonies he ever composed now, but unfortunately this 3rd one is underrehearsed and this spoils my joy.

The music is epic and everyone who wants to think it's another Bruckner symphony could be right, but ofcourse it isn't.

The performance is inadequate from the first bars on. Most of the wind instruments sound false or ARE false. The flow of the music isn't well observed (which has to be especially when everybody wants this one to sound like Bruckner), the conductor seems to know what he wants but the orchestra doesn't respond accordingly.

Recording is thin and pumping up the volume made it unbearable to me. Violins sound like glass, timpani muddy and horns like cow bells.

Still, a very interesting work which had to be done by a good German orchestra. Let's hope CPO does this job soon.
