1994 rolls around and metal is dead, at least as far as the mainstream is concerned. Not that thrash metal was really ever mainstream, but "metal" basically became a four letter word in the media and taboo to utter over radio waves or on MTV(Headbangers Ball went down in flames around 93/94). Grunge bands that grew up listening to metal sure as hell weren't about to admit that they did. Basically metal was stuck in the closet and a handful of nameless metal bands decided to jump on that "Alternative" music bandwagon for a shot at Top 40 success.
Not Overkill!! Overkill had been a thrash band for a decade and celebrated that anniversary by releasing an album of good ol' no B.S. thrash in 94. Hell, Overkill were never a chart topping band to begin with, why the hell would they try now? They had a dedicated fan base and they knew their fans would by the album regardless of what was "cool".
I remember picking up W.F.O. back when it came out. I must have been a bit naive at the time coz I never thought thrash had really died. Some folks didn't quite know what to make of me playing this album loudly and proudly. Not that I care.
I think W.F.O. is one of the best albums of Overkill's career. Tons of catchy and memorable songs. It's fast, and it's heavy. After this album, Overkill would really beef up the heavy guitar sound and turn the speed down just a tad. I'm not saying that's bad coz Overkill would put out some kickass albums later down the road(From The Underground and Below for example) But on this one it sounds like it could have come from the 80s. Not as fast as Slayer or Kreator, but W.F.O might appeal to those who dig the sound of bands like 80s Anthrax and Testament. But if you've never cared for Overkill, this isn't gonna change your mind.
I'm glad I bought this in 94. I'm glad I did my part to keep the scene alive. I'm gonna go listen to it now.

Well if you like good old school thrash riffs, then this is the album for you. I am pretty impressed at the variety and quality and sheer number of riffs on this thing. I will add that it is great that Overkill mixes in the bass so it can actually be heard from time to time. Very, very rare in the world of extreme metal. The production is excellent. Very crisp. Despite the many positives on this album, the only reason I can't give 5 stars is Blitz. I can't get my head around that guy's voice. I've been listening to Overkill since the mid 80s, and have always been very impressed with their music, but Blitz's vocals are an acquired taste that I just can't seem to fully acquire....And yes, I realize that this is Overkill and that Blitz has a 'unique style'. Can't do much about it. Same crap with Iron Maiden. Distinctive music wrecked by the vocalist (in my opinion).

But anyway, 5 stars for the nifty guitar & bass work on this album. And its production. Gotta deduct a point for the vocals....sorry Blitz.

The only way that I can describe Overkill's style is biker thrash. Go to one of their shows if you don't believe me. You will see a lot of bikers there. This album is the logical follow-up to 1991's "Horrorscope", just more punky and bikerish. 1993's "I Hear Black" is almost a complete departure from the style of "Horrorscope" and makes no logical sense anywhere in Overkill's discography. I like this album quite a bit. I have heard that people don't like this or any other 90's Overkill album very much besides "Horrorscope". I do agree that "Horrorscope" is the best Overkill album from the 90's but I still like "I Hear Black", "W.F.O." and "The Killing Kind" quite a bit. If you're into quality non-generic thrash metal from the 90's definately get this album. You won't be disappointed.
