Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8--With a wonderful variety of graphics, photos, and maps, this book brings the story of the Essex to life. In 1820, the shipsank in the Pacific after being rammed by a whale. Fine recounts how the men were stranded in three small whaleboats and describes what they did to stay alive, including eating the flesh of those who died. She writes in a straightforward style, clearly describing the events that took place without any fictionalization. Interesting details based on survivors' accounts are included. The information is broken up by boldfaced headlines. This easy-to-read, high-interest title will appeal to browsers and serve as an excellent resource for reports.--Karen Hoth, Marathon Middle/High School, FL

3.0 out of 5 stars Very light reading..., August 8, 2011

This review is from: The Whaleship Essex: The True Story of Moby Dick (High Interest Books) (Paperback)
Along with two other books to read, "Whaleship Essex" was listed as 'extra credit' for 8th grade summer homework . This 'book' is more like a Cliff notes guide. There are only 41 pages of reading and 7 pages of notes & index. It is printed with a large font and would probably work very well with 4th or 5th graders. The information and story is very interesting but our son finished it in less than 30 minutes. Fascinating story but it's "just the facts."
