This review is from: Whaling Will Never Do For Me: The American Whaleman in the Nineteenth Century (Paperback)
I took a chance by getting this book because it had not been rated yet. I was looking for a book that describes the life of whalers on a whaling ship. This was beyond my expectations. It was an informative, exciting read, never getting dull. And it truly made me wonder why would anybody choose to go whaling.
The Chapters are 1) The American Whaleman 2) Crime and Punishment 3) Race and Status 4) Work Stoppages 5) Whalemen and American Consuls Abroad 6) Desertion 7) The Practice of Religion 8) Whalemen's Women, Whalemen's lives 9) The Festive and the Ceremonial 10) Waterfront Haven's and the Honolulu Riot of 1852 |
