Before all of the Bon Jovi fan club members jump on me (of which I'm a member), let me categorically state that I am a HUGE Bon Jovi fan...as a guitar player, Richie is one of my music idols -- ditto Jon for his song-writing. In my opinion, they will go down as one of the best song-writing partnerships of all time. Furthermore, as a guitar player, I play pretty much every song in their catalog.

BUT....I hate to be honest...

This is one of the worst albums they've come out with -- up there with THIS LEFT FEELS RIGHT, and BOUNCE...i was going to even through 7800 Fahrenheit in the mix because it is such a dark album -- but, at least a case could be made that 7800 was obviously a heavy metal / hard rock album.

Except for "What About Now" and "That's What the Water Made Me", the rest of the songs on this new album are pretty bland and easily forgotten. (By the way, am I the only one who thinks the opening drum solo to "That's what the Water Made Me" is almost identical to the opening drum solo of "Just Older"??)

And while I realize that time moves on -- and with that it means music also changes with time -- does a band have to abandon most of it's musical roots? I mean, wasn't Bon Jovi a heavy metal / rock band at one time??

What happened to all of Richie's guitar solos? There aren't nearly as many solos as there once used to be...And, of the few solos that we do hear, they certainly are not the booming, melodic, defining pieces of art that Bon Jovi (and Sambora) are known for...and that have defined Bon Jovi's music and greatest hits.

Pop Question: What's up with Jon's country accent when he sings? You know what I'm talking about...that little twang that he developed from the LOST HIGHWAY album.

I think that people are being overly critical of this album. Is it Slippery When Wet? No, but it's every bit an album that deserves to take it's place on the catalog. Personally I enjoy the more thoughtful side of the new songs. When I was in my 20's and partying to SWW I wanted that album, now I've aged, and matured and I don't mind a glass of wine instead of beer from a keg sometimes. Give it a listen, it's good, quality stuff!

2013. 30 years of career, more than 100 million records sold, hundreds of prizes and countless live shows played - Bon Jovi are truly one of the greatest bands around the world. Time to take a rest? Not so if your name is Bon Jovi. With "What about Now" the boys from Jersey want to proof the world once again that they still do not think about retiring or taking it slow, but going on stage again and rock that world. In order to do so, they bring along twelve (if you exclude the bonus tracks) new songs, full of political criticism and stories of people that struggle in those hard times. But Bon Jovi would not be Bon Jovi if the overall message of the songs wouldn't be optimistic. No matter how hard the times are, stand up again, take that fight and go on! Why? Because We Can!
But can they still rock? Honestly, I have to say that I was never so torn apart with any of their records. Nevertheless I will try to write down why:

BECAUSE WE CAN (7/10):

I heard the song a couple of weeks ago when it was air played on German radios for the first time. And I was kind of shocked or let's say really irritated. That's the sound of Bon Jovi in 2013? The song did not convince me at all and reminded me more of a pop band than a rock band with 30 years of songwriting experiences. Really soft and way too much influenced by the Obama spirit (don't get me wrong, I like Obama a lot, but it was too much for me) - it actually sounded like Obama's political program put into a song. Bon Jovi have always been a critical and political band, but, let's say, their political attitude was never so obvious before.
So do I hate the song? No, not really, it changed after listening to it for a couple of times.

It pains me to say this, but this new album is terrible. I get that your style has to change a little with each album, but to not even rock anymore, at all? That is a slap in the face to their fans. I thought The Circle was disappointing and their worst, but What About Now makes The Circle look good. I didn't like Lost Highway, but I get that it was a country album and that's not my thing, so I let it go and expected them to come back and rock again. They didn't. Their last good album was Have A Nice Day. Bounce had some fillers but still had 4 excellent songs, this album only has 1 decent one (Because We Can) that doesn't even compare to any good ones from their classic albums. I'm not even picky at all, but this is just lazy and wimpy "rock." They have lost their passion to create new hard rock music, even Richie's newest solo album was harder than this. If this is the way it's going to be, just stop creating albums and stick to touring. I am seeing them in concert in two days and I expect it to great, but I have about given up on any more good Bon Jovi albums.

I've loved them for about 27 years so maybe I'm biased but I think this one is better than The Circle by far. I read some reviews saying people thought it was a "corporate rock" album, but these guys have always written this way, sometimes a little edgier than others. That's why we love them, because they aren't so far removed from our lives. They make us smile and give us hope. There's a sincerity and love in their music that comes through and touches me and I'd rather listen to them than "Gagnam Style" any day! And in concert no one rocks as hard or as long (3 hours with no opening act!) as Bon Jovi! Their music is the soundtrack to my life and I will always support them!
