5.0 out of 5 stars This is my passion
I listen to tons of Comedy Albums, I have the Complete works of Carlin Seinfeld Cosby, and Newhart (and many others too) and I have to say Carlin is the King, Jerry is close behind but he just isn't as good as Carlin. Now about this CD in particular I think it is his best. I know that in other ones like Back in Town he does some funny S--T like Do you have your own...

1.0 out of 5 stars George turns off his brain and gets "edgy"
Yeesh, this is where it all started going downhill....fast. George apparently woke up one, fine morning in the late 80's and decided that being funny, cerebral and incisive wasn't going to get him raved about by the media intelligentsia; sooo he thought he'd play the cranky, old hippie thing. I remember clearly saving up the ticket money from my job at the time(busing...

Now about this CD in particular I think it is his best. I know that in other ones like Back in Town he does some funny S--T like Do you have your own words, Or his Seat belt bash in Jammin' In New York. But this is my favorite. As one who lives for comedy I think my opinion means something in this is The Real thing,

4.0 out of 5 stars 17 year old from NJ loves Carlin, even if a bit dated, November 12, 2000

This review is from: What Am I Doing in New Jersey (Audio CD)
This album is one of George's classics. Being a 17 year old New Jersean, I loved everything from the fourth track on. Favorite bites include, "you cant pull out of you driveway without some guy in a hat wants 50 cents!" and "when you pull up to a toll plaza, bargain with the guy!" However, the first track isn't funny unless you were alive and paying attention to politics in the 80's, and police bashing on a NJ themed album doesn't seem right after all the NJ state trooper controversies. But, all in all, its great Carlin.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not George's best, but still a great one, nonetheless., April 4, 2003

"What am I doing in New Jersey" is definately not some of George's best work but it is definately a good CD. On this CD, George rants about People he can do without, drivers, Ronald Reagan and many more. This album is still a must-own for any Carlin fan.

Especially if you are traveling through New Jersey. This CD marks the first of the "Angry Carlin" group, and is undoubtedly his best work. From the first line "I haven't seen a group this large since they brought together all the criminals and lawbreakers in the Ronald Reagan administration", through his scathing (and sidesplitting) views of American culture, and the second half on cars and driving, this is a must have for any comedy fan.

Hey, gop37 -- howsabout actually, I dunno...*reviewing the particular album in question*, instead of moping about a bad Saturday night you had 15 years ago(!) (Or am I somehow mistaken about the point of this particular exercise? Do we really get to just tell some stories?) Let's show some focus, huh?

And far from being the beginning of the end, this record marked a new beginning for Carlin. Not quite as precisely effective as either some of his later work nor his very early stuff, I'll grant you. Still, a definite improvement on the fairly lackluster "A Place for My Stuff" and "Playin' With Your Head", to be sure. He IS more passionate and more impatient here, yes -- and that's to the benefit of the material. (Just how good can your act be if you yourself are fairly dispassionate about it?) Bottom line, he's starting to try again. That's a good thing.

I found the first ten or so minutes to be particularly good, myself -- but that's coming from someone who values the social commentary side of Carlin's routine more than the "little things" part of the equation (ask yourself how many comics can do one, and how many can do the other). There's real substance there -- the material itself is meatier, so there's greater potential for it to effect you, as well.

And the pointing out of absurd hypocrisy (especially in the political sphere) is always good, powerful, resonant stuff. There's quite a bit of it at the album's beginning, and Carlin must've had a field day with it -- and it shows. Still, I'd recommend giving the whole album a once-over -- or more. I wouldn't necessarily rank 'New Jersey' up there with, say, 'Back in Town', but I definitely think it's worth picking up.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of his best, August 11, 2000

Simply put, George Carlin is one of America's best comedians and this is one of his finest works. His piece on driving (on side 2) is worth the purchase in and of itself.

5.0 out of 5 stars He was just here a minute ago, September 25, 2010

Any Carlin review I write will always be the same. He was a genius; I loved his comedy, his "take" on everything; I miss him so much.
He had so much more to offer. He intended on writing another book and he had his sights on Broadway. Definitely, a few more HBO specials would have been part his undertakings. I so wish I could have been honored to hear more of his ideas and wordplay, his unmatched comic genius... his truth and wisdom.
So, unlike some who critique the sound of the DVD, or the "this and the that", it doesn't even cross my mind. It is only his unique style, his talent that grabs my attention. Alas, I am a true George Carlin fan. I have purchased everything he every did, his auto, everything and it is all superb!! He was always "too hip for the room". Thanks for everything, George.

4.0 out of 5 stars George Carlin-What am I doing in New Jersey?, July 4, 2009
A very good comedy performance from one of the leading comedians of our past 50 years. Georges' unique insight, is put to words that our mothers would be horrified to learn we listened to, but yet, if used differently, would be proud to say that we were so intellecutally wise. The views that George presents, make you wonder why you weren't paying more attention in the first place, but with your ensuing laughter comes the realization that nothing is perfect, and we can't change the whole world overnight, but by us feeling better we can make a difference-starting within.
