One of the Best Country Albums Ever Made,
By
This review is from: What Am I Gonna Do About You (Audio CD)
When I play this CD, I almost want to weep at the stuff Reba is putting out today. Her Paula Abul-like releases of late might be enjoyable had she not turned out the creme de le creme of country music in the mid to late eighties. This particular collection boasts ten of the strongest songs ever assembled on a non-Greatest Hits package. From the fifties sounding "Take Me Back," to the odes to fidelity "My Mind is on You," and "One Promise too Late," Reba sings traditional country at its finest. Unlike her recent offerings where the overly pretentious instrumentations fight to drown her out, songs like "Why Not Tonight" (written by Kathy Mattea's husband Jon Vezner) and "No Such Thing" showcase Reba's dynamic voice perfectly. As expected from genuine country music, these songs tug at your emotions. While "I Heard he Crying," and the title track are pensive and melancholy, "Lookin' for a New Love Story" is upbeat and inspiring. If you're a diehard country fan, you already own this CD, but for those only familiar with recent Reba and think Shania Twain and country music can even be mentioned in the same sentence, this disc is a required purchase!

A very strong Reba album from the eighties,

When I buy an album without knowing which tracks will be released as singles, I like to guess and I usually guess right. I was totally wrong with this album, demonstrating just what a high quality album this is. Most of the songs on this album are joyful, uplifting songs.Take me back is a rousing, up-temp song to get those toes tapping. Till it snows in Mexico is a song about eternal love and is surely one of the finest ballads that Reba ever recorded. I was convinced that both were obvious singles and would have been huge hits on the country charts, yet they were not released as singles. Another track I particularly like that wasn't a single is the amusing My mind is on you. Of the other songs, One promise too late and the title track both reached number one on the country chart. I heard her crying is an extremely sad song not typical of this album, but Reba has demonstrated on other albums her enthusiasm for this type of song. Reba never recorded a better album than this.

These are the songs that made Reba who she is today. She is my favorite of all.I swear she was following me around at this time of my life and singing about me. If she wasn't you can't convince me of it. Reba is the reining 'Queen' of country...

I love Reba's music. I have never found a cd I didn't like that she has put out. This is some of her earlier music and it is great. A must have!!

I agree with most of the consensus of the reviewers here. When Reba made her last traditional offering...."The Last ONe to Know".....was when she topped out at the awards. It was all downhill from that point. This CD is a great reminder of 'long time past'....when Reba sang the way country was meant to be sung!! Would that she would go back to doing this...but, knowing Reba, she WON'T. This is one of the greatest albums she ever recorded!!

Follow-up to Whoever's In New England,

This review is from: What Am I Gonna Do About You (Audio CD)
After the ground-breaking success of Whoever's In New England, Reba released this stunning collection of great songs. This album was released during the peak of Reba's critical career, this was the year she received the Entertainer of the Year Award and placed herself far ahead of any other female in the genre. She was proving that a girl could go head-to-head with the boys and win. Commercially, Reba's popularity would continue to rise astronomically from this point, but many argue this period of music was her best. Personally, I think her commercial and artistic peak coincide in the early to mid-1990's, and resurged again with the 1998 release If You See Him. But this album represents Reba in the beginning of her glory days and is definetely worth a listen.
