Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

One of my jobs as managing editor at Fawcett is to select which of our production editors works on which book. This means that I get to first save the books that I want to work on for myself. So I jumped at the opportunity to work on Maureen Wartski's wonderful young adult novels.
Ms. Wartski's novels take me back to my high school days, where I had a whole different set of fears and worries, likes and loves. She makes me feel as if I am once again walking the halls of the schools (in this case, South Regional High School) with the rich, detailed characters who are so familiar to me. Ms. Wartski's ability to re-create this critical time in our lives and to portray it all so well is part of the reason why I so enjoy working on her books. And then there's the dialogue--it's perfect.
This book also deals with some very serious situations and their tragic outcomes. I knew someone who took a similar route as does Rea Alvarez, and the author's skill in handling it is exceptional. This is a book that I am proud to have been a part of.

Mark Rifkin, Managing Editor

More About the Author

I'm Maureen Wartski, writer, artist, wife, mother, grandmother; you can see that I have many of the bases covered.

I was born in Ashiya, Japan, a (then) small town which lay cradled between sea and mountains. In the evenings, we would walk along the road that ran past Osaka Bay, and a great moon would rise out of the water to turn the world to silver. I'm told that my first words were, "Big moon!"

All my life I have felt the tug to write something, draw something, put together something with fabric, string and color, and the urge to create has grown through the years.

Yuri's Brush with Magic, my new book for middle schoolers follows the adventures of a brother and sister, the magic of words, and the incredible magic of the natural world. I'd love to hear from you!

I found this book exrtemely unique...I have read so many books in my life, but this one will stick in my mind. It is about an ordinary teenager in an extraordinary position. Meg was just an ordinary highschool freshman. Then, she meets Rea, whom Meg considers a very nice girl. But then Meg hears some incredible rumors anbout Rea, and the worst happens...but I will leave the details for you to read!!!

What Are They Saying About Me? By Maureen Wartski

This book is a wonderful book; my favorite one. It's about a girl name Meg Fairling who starts a new year at a new high school. On the first day, she meets a girl named Rea Alvarez, who is shy, but Meg still likes her.

But then, she meets a group of girls who are really the most popular girls in school. They tell her things about Rea that she's sure is not true. She doesn't know who to believe, which eventually has somewhat to do with the devastating thing Rea does later in the book.

When Rea committs this act, Meg tries even harder to find out what's true and what's not. She soon finds out that the girls have their own secret club where they worship Greek goddess, Diana. Others in the school call them the "Hunters". When Meg starts searching for the truth a bit too much, her and her friends' lives are put in danger! By Carolyn O'Neil

5.0 out of 5 stars My Feeling On Maureen Wartski's What Are They Saying Abo.., March 5, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: What Are They Saying About Me? (Mass Market Paperback)
This is my favorite book. Meg's situation brought me to tears at times. I understand the hopeless feeling--girls at my school tend to be just as viscious. I also like the mystery element...Is Diana Angeli good or bad? Is she really "The Evil Angel" that Rea's grandmother called her? This book is one sure to stir up debate. Maureen Wartski has done a wonderful job! --Claire
