5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST read for all parents!!!!, May 31, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: What Are They Teaching Our Children (Paperback)
This book is the story of a Texas couple who get involved in reading school textbooks when one of their sons asks them about a part of American history. When they answer, he says, "That's not what my textbook says!" Upon reading the son's text, the Gablers were appalled to find a very differnt story of American history. This incident lead them to looking at his other texts and ultimately, to reading multiple texts and voicing their concerns to the textbook committee in their state.

The book opens with the Gablers being interviewed by Mike Wallace on 60 Minutes. He chooses an excerpt from a text which, upon being read, was SO obscene that it could not be aired!

To see what has happened to American education, what the educational "experts" think important and, perhaps, some answers as to what has happened in our schools and how we got to Columbine, read this book.

BUT, be prepared to be shocked at what your children are being exposed to in the name of "education" and to be shocked at what they DON'T know. Be SURE to take the test on page 20, a sample from a high school ENTRANCE test from 1911. See how you do.

Be forewarned, you may get angry, you may be appalled, you will want answers from SOMEONE as to WHY our children are being exposed to information which cannot be sent through the airwaves due to obscenity laws and WHY the rights of parents are being infringed upon in the name of education. Be ready to wonder WHY the educational "experts" have and are fighting so hard for this information to remain in our children't texts and WHY they are so opposed to parents being informed about the content of texts, and why they are so hostile to parents, like the Gablers, who wish to call them to accountability to us, the taxpaying parents.

DON'T MISS THIS BOOK!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!!, September 6, 2005
This review is from: What Are They Teaching Our Children (Paperback)
It will open your eyes! I homeschool now, not just for this reason, but now my children will never go back to public school. This book doesnt force homeschool though, it is just an option they briefly mention. They give you ways to fight for better text books in your public school and also your rights as a parent! You may want to read through your childrens books with them as well so you can correct anything they learn that is incorrect or against your values! This has been going on for a long time, I could relate to some of this personally from when I was in school over 10 years ago.. I'm sure it is much worse now! A must read!

5.0 out of 5 stars thought provoking, September 6, 2011
Mel and Norma Gabler were among the first publicly to raise the hue and cry about how the humanists had gained control of the educational textbook industry and through that of the public schools. Their work has been denigrated and vilified, especially by the educational establishment, but never successfully refuted. After an introduction by James C. Hefley, the Gablers ask, "Textbooks Have Changed--or Haven't You Noticed?" They talk about "How Public School Curriculum Got the Way It Is," then notice specific examples of how textbooks include the "new" religion that is hostile to Judeo-Christian principles, anti-Americanism, sex "miseducation," lessons in despair, relativistic values clarification, undermining the family, and evolution, concluding with chapters on, "How to Get Better Books into Your Schools and Survive" and "What More Can Parents Do?"
Remember, this was written in 1985. While there have been some victories since then, by and large the problem has not gotten any better but only worse. You wouldn't believe some of the admissions cited in this book. In the famous CBS 60 Minutes segment "What Johnny Can't Read," for which the Gablers and others were interviewed, Mike Wallace asked Seibert Adams, an editor for Random House, to comment on a health book submitted in Texas for fourteen-year-olds, which says that orgasm can be achieved through pleasurable petting. Wallace noted that Random House withdrew the book from consideration in Texas after the Gablers had begun to examine it. Adams replied that it was originally a college text and was only later introduced into high schools. Wallace then said, "You'll sell it where it'll go." Adams responded, "Correct. And the reason we do this is because the book takes no moralistic view." Wallace said, "It sure doesn't." And Adams concluded, "And we're proud of that." No wonder the homeschooling movement took off! What Are They Teaching Our Children? may seem a bit dated now with all that has gone on since then, but it is still thought-provoking and historically important.

4.0 out of 5 stars Education or Indoctrination, April 9, 2009
This review is from: What Are They Teaching Our Children (Paperback)
The Gablers do a great job of comparing America's traditional educational institutions with the modern public school system. For a couple of hundred years the Bible was an integral part of a young person's education in the United States. But that has changed in the past few decades. This book is dated now, but I think it is still thought-provoking and historically important.
