A must,

This review is from: What It Is to Be Me!: An Asperger Kid Book (Paperback)
Children and adults alike need to read this book. Most folks have no clue how unique and special Asperger characteristics are. Relatives and friends of individuals blessed with A.S. may not be willing to do research or even read a book, but this is so simple and in two minutes it can help a stranger to the situation realize how A.S. individuals contribute and make a precious contribution to humanity. Mrs. Wine may not have a PhD, but she knows more about this subject than any doctor. A loving mother and advocate, Mrs. Wine simplifies the often complex, misunderstood, mysterious behavior of the otherwise "obnoxious" appearance of A.S. to educate and disarm the ignorant.A must.

This book helped my daughter understand WHY she was different than her classmates, and to figure out that it wasn't necessarily a bad thing. I just wish the book was a little longer. It is a short book, only about a dozen pages long, but it did open a conversation that we had been needing to have. It was kind of amusing, in a heart-wrenching way, to see her defiantly declare on seeing the book, "I'm not Asperger's!", then on almost every single page, say softly, "Oh....I do that." By the end, she realized that yes, she WAS autistic, but it didn't have to be a bad thing, just different, and this book reinforces that idea. The last page says, "But Asperger's is what makes me....ME!!!"

Just Delightful!,

This review is from: What It Is to Be Me!: An Asperger Kid Book (Paperback)
This wonderful book features a young boy who has Asperger's Syndrome, which is the spectrum partner to autism. Asperger's Syndrome (AS) is a sensory neurobiological condition that affects sensory processing and communciation to varying degrees. This book is extremely well written. Simple without talking down to young readers, informative without being overly so, this book will provide good information and hopefully a chance to practice tolerance among young readers. I wish I had this book when I was a child. If I could rate it more than 5 stars, I would. Sammy Davis' Jr.'s song, "I've Got to Be Me" and the Turtles' 1965 smash "Let Me Be," which is the autism/Asperger's Anthem could be the soundtrack of this book.

My 6 year old Aspie child loved this book! It was simple enough for him to read by himself. The child in the story displayed many of the same qualities as my son, so he felt he could relate to this story. He also laughed at the page where the child is "so hungry I could eat a horse". My son wants to read this book over and over. I highly recommend this book to all parents with young children diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome.

I had ordered this book for my son's school. The last couple years we have found age appropriate books to read at the begining of the new school year. This gives the other kids an opportunity to understand and ask questions. It is hard to understand something you can't see...it has always been a hit! My son was the one who would answer the questions...it gives him confidence and the other children a better understanding. It really made a difference in how other students treated him..less bullying and more support! This was an excellent reference but my son is eleven and this was geared towards a younger audience. I gave it to a friend who has a son with AS....this has helped explain to her three other kids. They have found it to be helpful. My son also has ADHD and Tourettes Syndrom as well and we have purchased many other books from Amazon for the same reason.

I was looking for some books to read to my son's 1st grade class during the month of April for Autism Awareness month. I was disappointed with several books I found, but this was one of two that we liked. My seven year old loved related to this story. My son has Aspergers Syndrome and is high functioning, and appears to be a typical 7 year old, but "taking things literally", asking a lot of questions, and being sensitive to foods and sounds, described him to a T. This book was a good one for my son and his classmates. Great book!

great help for siblings,
This review is from: What It Is to Be Me!: An Asperger Kid Book (Paperback)
This book is a great resource for siblings of children diagnosed with Aspergers. Many siblings struggle to understand the behaviors of a sibling with Aspergers. This book clearly outlines for young children what the seemingly "odd" behaviors of Asperger diagnosed children are and to some extent why. My daughters found this extremely helpful in dealing with their younger brother. The illustrations are perfect, uncluttered and clarifying for young children.

My son, who is very advanced, was recently diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. I needed a way to explain to him why he had a whole host of new therapists and was undergoing all types of evaluations. I couldn't believe my eyes when this book arrived at my house. It describes my son to a T and allowed him to understand why things were changing. He always knew he was different, but couldn't understand why. This book explained to him that is ok to be like he is and gave him a name to go with it. I highly recommend this book to anyone with a child 5 or older.

Excellent Resource for Sharing Asperger Syndrome with Your Children,
By Joanna Keating-Velasco "Joanna" (Orange County, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: What It Is to Be Me!: An Asperger Kid Book (Paperback)
This book immediately caught my attention via the illustrations by David Crary. They are basic yet creative enough to convey the emotions and points without too much detail. The text includes easy-to-read large print brief statements that accent the illustrations. The statements share both the challenges and benefits regarding some of the issues kids with Aspergers Syndrome face. Please note that the main character in this book is a boy. This 13-page book targets kids from preschool through lower elementary who have recently been diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome. Having a character with whom they might identify is important at this time in their life; so that readers realize that they are not alone in this diagnosis and that kids with ASD also share some very positive qualities. In addition, it would be a good basic book to share with siblings or others who directly interact with your child who has autism. All in all, a great resource!
