Book Description

September 1, 2002
For decades the Bears have been known as the Monsters of the Midway, with valid reason. Since their inception in 1920 they have been the roughest, toughest franchise around. It was bred into them during the forty years George Halas stalked the sideline, cursing, cajoling, inspiring, taunting, and forever showing a fearlessness that proved rabidly contagious to his players.

To have built such a reputation, one that has withstood more than eighty years of contentious, raucous, free-spirited competition in that gladiatorial arena known as the National Football League, the Bears had to have a unique cast of characters, spirited on one hand and capable of terrifying Attila’s Huns on the other.

The Bears have had more than their share of certified legends: George Halas, Red Grange, Bronco Nagurski, Sid Luckman, Gale Sayers, Mike Ditka, Dick Butkus, Walter Payton and Mike Singletary to name just a few. Their stories are told through their own words, the words of their teammates and archival photographs throughout.

And these stories tell of the escapades, the pranks, the feuds, the personal whims and superstitions, and the agonies and ecstasies, all the crazy, happy, sad things that transpired in the locker room, at the training camp, during the games and after them; this is Bear lore from those who helped shape it.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Any football fan will enjoy this collection of anecdotes, inside scoops, tall tales, and memories of the NFL's original franchise; Bears fans will sleep with it under their pillow. Whittingham, whose The Meat Market (1992) is still the best ever book on the league's college draft, has gathered hundreds of memories of great--and not so great--Bears and assembled them in such a way to give readers a sense of the franchise's long history as a rough-and-tumble, tough-as-nails outfit. Typical of the stories are those involving Hall of Fame defensive end Doug Atkins, who once shot a gun through his training-camp dorm room because the guy upstairs wouldn't turn down his radio. Other notables who offer memories and are the subjects of others are Gale Sayers, Dick Butkus, Mike Singletary, and, of course, George "Papa Bear" Halas, founder of the Bears and the NFL. Great reading with dozens of memory-invoking black-and-white photos. Wes Lukowsky

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for Bears fans, October 24, 2011
This review is from: What Bears They Were: Chicago Bears Greats Talk About Their Teams, Their Coaches, and the Times of Their Lives (Hardcover)
I got this book years ago as a gift and it has been one of my favorite reads ever since. Probably the best book I've ever read about the Bears. If you are a die-hard Bears fan like I am you already know your history and the greats and don't need a book retelling stats and scores. This book is mostly what Bears fans haven't heard. Hilarious stories from the field and locker room alike.

Great book for any Chicago Bears fan!
