5.0 out of 5 stars Great resource, teaching tool & reference, January 29, 2002

This review is from: What the Bible is All about for Young Explorers (Paperback)
This is one of those books where the kids version is better than the adults version! It breaks down the Bible, into sections and sub-sections. For example, it introduces the 1st 5 books of the Old Testament as the Books of the Law, explains why they are called that, the main points, the main people, an outline of what happens in each chapter- and then it goes a wonderful step further, and links in known historical information, a map of 'Where It All Happened', and other pertinent information about the world at that time. The same format is followed for each Book of the Bible. Within each book there are small illustrations & summaries of the main events in each chapter, which are surprisingly well done- not off-putting to an adult, very accessible to a child. The reference materials at the end- a good dictionary of words that one doesn't often see outside of the Bible!, Bible geography, good time lines of the Old & New Testaments, and an amazing 16 pages of good color pictures tucked away at the end make this book a must!

There are bits that are clearly written for children, and the section on 'Becoming God's Child' may or may not fit exactly with your view of things, but don't be put off by those: this is a great tool for getting to grips with a lot of information.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what my kids need!, June 4, 1999

This review is from: What the Bible is All about for Young Explorers (Paperback)
I teach Sunday School to third graders, most of whom are more likely to associate Genesis with computer games rather than with the Bible. Our church gives every third grader a Bible -- an adult Bible, with very little study helps or annotations. This book is exactly what my third graders need to help them begin to understand and appreciate God's Word. Although it's written in language the kids can understand, it doesn't talk down to them.

My daughter, who has both the NIV and NIrV Kids' Study Bible, also loves this book.

I liked this book so much, I bought the adult version for myself. I also purchased the reproducible timelines, maps, etc. These will be a tremendous help in both my personal Bible study and my Sunday School class.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid material in a fun format, July 26, 2006
This review is from: What the Bible is All about for Young Explorers (Paperback)
I am a Christian Education Director and have been looking for some solid material for older youth 5th-8th grade. This book illustrates each book in the Bible within a couple of pages with black and white line drawing charactures. It may sound young, but even my adult committee wanted copies for themselves. I am putting together an entire curriculum using this book for the youth, over a four year period (two years OT & two years NT), along with "What The Bible Is All About Handbook:NIV Edition" for the teachers to get familiar with the Bible in about ten pages per book and the "What The Bible Is All About 101, 102, 201, 202", which are leader guides to teach.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't be more clear. A fantastic reference!, April 8, 2010
If you're looking for a great companion book for your child's Bible reading time - something that will give him or her a deeper understanding of the Word - Frances Blankenbaker's What the Bible is All About for Young Explorers is an excellent choice.

Based on Dr. Henrietta Mears' adult book What the Bible is All About, this children's volume explains who wrote each book of the Bible (if known), why it was given its particular title, where the story covered took place, and the main people found in that book. For all but a few shorter or less story-filled books of the Bible, an outline for the main events is also included. This section has a sort of comic book feel, with crisp, clean black and white drawings.

Numerous clear maps are also provided, as are a few notes about archeological finds supporting or shedding light on biblical stories. In addition, information on how the Savior fits into each book of the Bible is emphasized. For example, in the section on the book of Ruth - a book one might not instantly associate with giving information about Jesus- the author explains that Boaz is a sort of Christ figure. He "paid for the right to marry and protect Ruth. He volunteered to pay this price even though he did not have to," she writes.

You'll also find discussions on "what happened between the Old and New Testaments" and how each Gospel focuses on a different aspect of Jesus (Jesus the king, the servant, etc.). There's also a Bible dictionary in the back of the book, a Bible timeline, and color photographs of the Holy Land. The plan of salvation is also laid out at the beginning of the book.

What I Like: This book is remarkably clear and concise. Nothing is dumbed down (in fact, the book works very well for adults, too). The maps are truly helpful, the archeological information fascinating, and the color photographs even excited my preschooler. This is a superb reference that's highly useful for every Christian family.

What I Dislike: Nothing.

Overall Rating: Excellent.

My daughter and I have been reading this book in addition to the Bible. It helps lay the groundwork for the Bible. It is great for people just beginning to read the Bible on their own. It gives the history and background of the writings. It was a worthwhile purchase. My daughter is 10.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just for kids ..., September 22, 2010
This review is from: What the Bible is All about for Young Explorers (Paperback)
I was given this book to use with our younger kids. I ended up keeping it in my office for preparing children's sermons. I now keep it on my desk for easy reference.

It is not an intense commentary, but it is a wonderful summary of information on what is included in each book of the Bible, what dates it was written, who (possibly) wrote the book, the focus of each book, and maps showing the locations mentioned in the books. The back includes pages of actual photos from the Holy Land.

I suppose I'll have to give in eventually and pass it on to our Church Library for "real" kids to use, but for now, I'm enjoying it as one of my quick references.
