A great vampire story, January 15, 2005
This review is from: What Big Teeth You Have: A Vampire Tale (Paperback)
I've been waiting a long time to find a good vampire story set in North Carolina. Jimmy Autrey didn't disappoint me with this book. "What Big Teeth You Have" is both ultra-violent and poetic at the same time. It's obvious that Mr. Autrey is a lover of the vampire genre and has gone out of his way to create a story that feels familiar yet is totally fresh. It's also refreshing to read a vampire novel that isn't a carbon copy of Anne Rice's work.
I especially enjoyed Autrey's use of fairy tale imagery to give the tale a wonderful gothic quality. In fact, I'd describe this book as a reverse fairy tale where all the wicked characters take center stage. Just like the villians in your favorite fairy tales, Autrey's characters have all the over-the-top evil qualities that help make a fun read. I can see this book growing a cult following.
This book made me an instant fan of Autrey's work. If we're all lucky maybe he'll put out a follow-up novel one day.

Nice story, badly told, June 9, 2008
This review is from: What Big Teeth You Have: A Vampire Tale (Paperback)
I am always sceptical when buying a book from a never-heard-of-before author. But I am also eager to discover new talents with fresh ideas, especially with the vampire genre. So when I saw this book, it sounded promising enough to give it a try.
The story itself is not too bad, with evil vampires for a change, some gory scenes and a nice twist towards the end. However, the storytelling is a real letdown. It reads more like a report of events and misses everything that makes a good story worth reading. The author is not able to create atmosphere or to stir emotions in the reader. Although he sometimes tries to convey thoughts or feelings, he does so only in very short lines and a sober voice. It is told without imagination, which simply does not work for a book of fiction.
I was glad the book was so short, but then this is also part of the problem here. Where other books may be better with less pages, this book could have become a real pageturner had the author added some personality and enthusiasm for writing.
