4.0 out of 5 stars Fair warning, contains a story of children who die in the woods
I ordered this book as a gift for my niece sight unseen based on the reviews here. While I do enjoy the book overall, I was surprised to find two pages dedicated to a story where children go off into the woods, get lost and die alone. There is warning at the top of the story that says "Here is a sad story". I felt a little bad giving it to my two year old niece for...

2.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book, Poor Reprint
First off, this book is wonderful -- this is purely a review of the reprint. I still have a beat up version of the original -- this one literally pales in comparison. The colored pages look like a color xerox copy; the colors are not nearly as vibrant and the images aren't as crisp.

It looks like all of the text was reset, and so far I've found one passage...

This review is from: Oh, What a Busy Day (Hardcover)
I ordered this book as a gift for my niece sight unseen based on the reviews here. While I do enjoy the book overall, I was surprised to find two pages dedicated to a story where children go off into the woods, get lost and die alone. There is warning at the top of the story that says "Here is a sad story". I felt a little bad giving it to my two year old niece for Christmas, so I told her parents about it and they were a little put off by it.

This book is everything the other reviewers say it is. The pictures are wonderful to look at, the prose is fun to read and it brings back thoughts of simpler childhood times. I would not hesitate to buy it for my own children and perhaps skip over that story until they were older. But since no other review that I could find mentions this story, I wanted to put it out there for others to be aware of.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book to be Treasured, October 8, 2001

This children's book is one of the best, a true classic. My 25 year old daughter had me search high and low for this book that is now out of print (or was). The reason she wanted the book is because when she was young, we spent many hours reading and viewing the wonderful words and pictures that make this book special. We had actually read the hard cover book so often that it fell apart and disappeared from our home. If you are fortunate enough to have a copy of this masterpiece, please hold on to it. It's a rare and beautiful glimpse into the hearts and minds of children.

It looks like all of the text was reset, and so far I've found one passage completely missing. ("Fuzzy wuzzy was a bear.") It also has a much wider leading, so the proportions are off.

This is a visual book, so I was very disappointed that this was such a poor reproduction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Children's favorite, February 3, 2003
By A Customer
I first bought this book for my oldest daughter who is now 25 and expecting her first child. We wanted to find the book again for her baby. I was able to order a used book in Oct. Last week, 1/29 my daughter found out that it is in print again! She bought one for her baby and a copy for me and her sister. She bought all the bookstore had! It went into print in 2002 by Backpack publ.

5.0 out of 5 stars My very, very favorite book to read to my now-grown children, October 17, 1999

Some of my happiest memories include the numerous times I read this to my two girls who are now in college. The words flow beautifully and have a magical sound. Lots and lots of interesting things for the little reader to name and remember. I only wish I could buy copies for the new little babies in my life!! HELP!

5.0 out of 5 stars I have finally found THE book from my childhood!!, November 19, 2010
By
This review is from: Oh, What a Busy Day (Hardcover)
This book is pure magic. For the past 10-15 years I have been reminiscing about a book I had when I was extremely young (around 2-4 years old), from which I only remembered a couple illustrations, and one poem, and a vague image of the cover, in my head all this time.....I knew nothing about the title or author, since I was so so young when I had it. But I kept remembering it so fondly and wishing I could find it again. A couple months ago while in a bookstore, I came across "A Child's Book of Poems" and the artwork immediately made my heart stop; the book looked SO much like the one I'd been remembering from my childhood. I looked through all the pages but didn't see the exact things I was hoping for, but I knew that the artwork HAD to be related to the book I wanted to find. So I bought the book because it was so sweet anyway (I now have a toddler daughter too). Fast forward to tonight, when I picked up my new book again to look at, and decided what the heck, I did a search for the author online. I found lists of the author's works and just started trying to narrow things down in my head. As soon as I read the publisher's notes/brief description of "Oh, What a Busy Day!", I searched for images of that book and saw some and I KNEW I had FINALLY found THE book!!! I was so excited and happy I started crying! I immediately called my mother to tell her, since she knew I'd been thinking about this mysterious book for decades. :)
The artwork is so wonderful. It is the artwork alone that literally led me right to the book I'd been haunted by for so long. I know that my daughter will think this book is as magical as I did when I was so little.

5.0 out of 5 stars Please bring it back!, November 29, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Oh What A Busy Day (Hardcover)
This was my favorite book as a child in the seventies - my mom tells me we read this one book over and over each night before bed! Our copy was so well-loved that it was thrown away years ago, and I've since been searching for another copy of this special book for myself and for friends who are having children. PLEASE REPRINT THIS BOOK!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely pictures, interesting to a child, January 17, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Oh, What a Busy Day (Hardcover)
I had this book as a child and am happy it is back in print. The real treasure of this book is its pictures. They are big, lively, mostly beautiful, and interesting to preliterate children. The words are not always outstanding, but that doesn't really matter. THe real point of this book is to snuggle up with a small child and look at a book together, discussing the pictures and poring over the children in them. I would warn that the old story of the "Babes in the Wood" is in here, at the end of which the babes in the wood die. Back in the olden days when I was little, this may have been seen as appropriate for a children's book, but you don't see a lot of death in modern kid lit. If you are creeped out by it, you could always skip the words, or say they are sleeping. Not a reason not to buy it, this book is great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most Memorable Book from Childhood, August 18, 2008

I was about 5 years old when I discovered this book, and I remember that I would check it out from the library, keep it for 2 weeks, and then renew it. The library had a rule about how many times you could renew before it had to sit on the shelf for a week. If no one else had renewed it, I would snatch it up as soon as I was allowed. This is absolutely my favorite book from childhood. I would stare at it for hours!
