4.0 out of 5 stars Complete Dick Himber vol. 2, January 15, 2009
This review is from: What Can You Say in a Love Song? (Audio CD)
This second volume of what will have to be the complete Richard Himber (oh, dear, are we really in need of the complete Richard Himber?) takes us to 1934. The band is basically the same as that on vol. 1 (including Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Adrian Rollini and other well known musicians) and so is the music: pleasantly arranged (with a healthy absence of any stylistic tricks that mar so much of America's sweet bands' music) and well executed polite dance music largely drawn from what would become the American Songbook. Vocals by Joey Nash are delivered in a typically thirties' high pitched, slightly nasal, voice (not unlike that of Rudy Vallee) and strictly limited to the obligatory vocal chorus sandwiched between the instrumental intro and coda. The booklet comes with full discographical details and a short bio on Richard Himber by Paul Lindemeyer (who was also responsible for various Isham Jones reissues). Remastering is well done with much respect for the original tonal quality of the band (where do you find a producer excusing himself for not being able to locate a better copy of a certain disc I wonder).
If you like dance music in general and that of the great British dance bands in particular, for Himber's band sounds more like those than like his American counterparts (Jack Hylton not being a name I would think of however) you can't go wrong with this disc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sure to Please, March 18, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: What Can You Say in a Love Song? (Audio CD)
I enjoyed this CD as I do all the Himber music from the '30's. This is not "sleepy" mellow music. I would describe it as elegant, beautiful, bouncy, danceable, melodic, and very romantic/sensual with a nice balance of humour/lightheartedness. A jolly good buy.
