4.0 out of 5 stars Not a Bad Little Book!

The author seems to know her stuff.

The book has an excellent lay out. Lots of pictures, easy to navigate, wonderful index, sort of like a FAQ on cat behavior.

Everyone from the novice to experienced cat owner is likely to learn something about the subject.

The subject itself is a little bland. Before you cat lovers all get...

1.0 out of 5 stars Not informative
I bought this after reading other reviews, but I was extremely disapponted in this book. The title is very misleading. I've had cats for years and wanted to learn more about their behavior and the differnt types of meows. This book does NOT do this. It's very basic and they write about behavior most children could figure out after being around their cat for a while. It...

Before you cat lovers all get upset about this remark, let me explain. According to Bailey the majority of cat behavior is rather simple, basic needs for safety, exploration, food, etc. Cat behavior is also rather simple: tail up or down, rub off scent, etc. This makes portions of the book repetitious. This is not a complaint. It is better to be truthful and a little bland than to invent a bunch of human response and lay those on the cat.

All in all it's a good book and worth owning. Cat owners won't be disappointed.

I've had cats for years and wanted to learn more about their behavior and the differnt types of meows. This book does NOT do this. It's very basic and they write about behavior most children could figure out after being around their cat for a while. It mostly addresses cats behavior with other cats which an idiot can figure out without having to read about it. Not worth the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting read, December 3, 2002
This review is from: What Is My Cat Thinking?: The Essential Guide to Understanding Pet Behavior (Hardcover)
The information on decoding your kitty's body langauge is quite interesting. But most of the information be known to seasoned cat owners. Will be a useful read for first time cat owners though. The pictures are great too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cat behavior for dummies, January 3, 2009
By
This review is from: What Is My Cat Thinking?: The Essential Guide to Understanding Pet Behavior (Hardcover)
Have you seen those "dummy" books? "What is my cat thinking?" is like that--simple and straight-to-the-point.

When my son goes out of town, I house sit which includes cat sitting for his three cats. He gave me this book for Christmas so I could get their behavior down pat. Little does he know that I already understand cat behavior. They eat, they poop, they groom, they sleep, then they start all over again.

According to the book, cats rub your legs for attention so that you will feed them. I think I detect a little affection in there for me, or it could be because I am about to feed them. But when I go to the bathroom, they come running to rub my legs as I sit. Surely they know they are not about to be fed in here! So, aha, proof that affection is involved!

The most interesting thing I read was that they mark their scent on the corner of a wall or sofa in the same place and the next cat comes along, smells that scent, then marks her scent over it. It's a constant rivalry thing that I've seen them do over and over.

Thank goodness "the next generation" chapter will not be used because my son had all three of his cats spayed. Doesn't he know you can't have all female cats in one house?

All in all, "What is my cat Thinking?" is a handy little reference if you don't know much about cats. Even if you do, it is pretty much entertaining.

The information on decoding your kitty's body language is quite useful but simple. Might be known facts to experienced cat owners already. Useful read for first time cat owners though. Great pictures.

3.0 out of 5 stars leaves much to be desired, November 3, 2010
This review is from: What Is My Cat Thinking?: The Essential Guide to Understanding Pet Behavior (Hardcover)
This book is cute, fairly informative but leaves much to be desired. It would be a good gift for a kid who is getting a cat for the first time, but the parent will want a book with a lot more answers than this picture filled book offers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for cat people!, August 22, 2009

This review is from: What Is My Cat Thinking?: The Essential Guide to Understanding Pet Behavior (Hardcover)
I absolutely love this book! I received it as a gift a couple of years ago and have gone back to it again and again, even though I have shared my life with cats for over thirty years. When I adopted a pair of two year old cats last year, I pulled it out again looking for guidance in making them a part of our family. This book shows many aspects of cat behavior using pictures with relatively little text, allowing the reader to be able to learn to interpret their own pet's actions by seeing different behaviors, moods and interactions caught in the remarkable photographs. I liked it so well I recently bought a copy for a friend who had never had a cat before and adopted one last year. It seemed a good way to answer all those questions about - well - "what's he thinking?". Of course it's impossible to know that for sure, but this book will take you pretty close. A slim book with no long passages of boring text, this book should be good for cat lover's of all ages and would make an excellent gift for new cat "owners". Scattered throughout are little "dialogue boxes" of text asking "Did you know?" with many bits of information I actually didn't know! Five stars all round!

4.0 out of 5 stars Hey, it's useful to me, May 11, 2008
This review is from: What Is My Cat Thinking?: The Essential Guide to Understanding Pet Behavior (Hardcover)
What a fun little book! As a cat fanatic, I appreciated reading behaviorist details about the furry little buggers. Ms. Bailey admits in the introduction that these are based soley on observation, but I feel that is as valid as anything else. She covers all the big areas of cat behavior, from hunting to human interaction. The set-up is wonderful, photograph-based with captions explaining what the cat is doing and why. Beautifully organized and easy-to-read. Great for all cat lovers.
