Book Description

Regency Romance September 1, 1996
SHE'D FOUND THE MAN OF HER DREAMS.
UNFORTUNATELY, HE DIDN'T WANT THE ROLE . . .
It was well known that what Chloe Somersham wanted, Chloe got. She wasn't spoiled or odiously rude. She was simply a very willful and spirited sprite, no doubt due to those blazing curls atop that pixie face. Despite her large dowry and her father's apoplectic pleas to make a suitable match, she remained unwed, dreaming instead of travel and adventure.
But when she met Liam MacRaith, Lord Mountrath, whose Irish eyes spoke of magnificent emerald isles and far-off magic, she made her choice. She wanted Liam--despite her father's ranting (an Irishman!) or the fact that Liam had no intention of marrying this outrageous hellion. True, he desperately needed funds and her fey Celtic beauty was intriguing. But he made his own decisions, thank you.
The challenge was on. The bets were laid, and the Town eagerly watched with gleeful anticipation. Would Chloe get what she wanted, once again? None were more curious than Lord Mountrath himself!
"[Emma Jensen is] a bright new star in the Regency heavens."

Review

Lady Chloe Somersham, an engaging free spirit, is the nineteen year old daughter of the gruff but caring Duke of Earith. He decrees she must be married by the end of the current Season, though she greatly opposes the plan. He wants her future ensured with a stabilizing partner, and he wants relief from her wild ways! On the streets of her native London, Chloe literally runs into Liam MacRaith, a man of humble birth. The title of Earl of Mountrath had recently passed to him. Unfortunately, the decrepit properties -- the London one at which he's staying may even be haunted -- and meager inheritance the title brings do little to improve his position. Chloe finds her dream of traveling the world alone fading as she repeatedly encounters the engaging Liam socially. He finds Chloe fascinating and delightful. She is pretty, rich, intelligent, and in love with him, after all. Yet he sees her as exasperatingly untamed, too forward in pursuing him, talkative and nonsensical -- I cannot make up my mind whether you are a lunatic or a genius, he declares. This reviewer chuckled over and over at the wit and humor with which this story abounds. The feel of time and place is enhanced by Jensen's distinctive word choices, including Gaelic phrases. She balances action and well-chosen details. Liam hates the Duke's cold haste toward sealing the match, his offers to buy him with a snowballing dowry. Maybe the charms of the lovely, laid-back Arabella Seanan would be easier to live with; maybe he should leave Chloe and her crazy ways to her heretofore frustrated suitor Geoffrey? A surprising, welcome find at Liam's rundown mansion and a threatening presence there send him suddenly home to Ireland, alone. Were all Chloe's capricious and devoted efforts for naught? Hey -- What Chloe Wants...Chloe's a 19th century Gracie Allen -- witty and clever, with the half-genuine, half-assumed air of the ingenue. You can't help but roll your eyes over this wacky lass, laugh at her antics, and love her all at once -- and neither can Liam. Refreshing -- it's not easy to create chemistry and satisfy sweet-romance fans, but Jensen pulls it off with style! Truly one of the most enjoyable Regencies of the year! Emma Jensen has a lovely comic sense, and her writing is polished and rich!Frances Mosconi -- Copyright © 1994-97 Literary Times, Inc. All rights reserved -- From Literary Times

5.0 out of 5 stars A new "old favorite"--straight to the "keeper shelf!", March 11, 2003

This review is from: What Chloe Wants (Regency Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
I enjoyed this book immensely. Chloe was a wonderful, funny heroine, and Liam was the perfect match for her--good sense of humor as well as being a "hunk." Chloe's father, a duke, makes an ultimatum, that Chloe must choose a husband by the end of the London Season, or he will do it for her. Her antics have gotten her into trouble, as usual, and he decides that marrying her off will solve the problem. She has to marry at least an earl, or greater rank. He forgets to specify "Not Irish!" Chloe literally bumps into the hero on the street, and is infatuated at first sight. Over the course of the book, she develops a love for the hero as well, as she spends more time with him. She unfortunately blurts out in front of a crowd that she "wants him," the second time she sees him, and Liam is much too proud to be bought with Chloe's father's money. He is an impoverished land-owner. The book is sweet and also has great laugh-aloud scenes and dialogues. Chloe tends to talk by running on from topic to topic, and it is so funny when Liam tries to follow her train of thought, often getting de-railed by her. I laughed so hard over one scene that I scared the cat, who was sitting next to me! I couldn't put the book down, and it read way too quickly. Besides the great hero and heroine, the author brings back some of her characters from earlier books, which made the book even more enjoyable. Definitely a keeper, and worth paying the price for it out of print!
