If you didn't already know, What If issues handled hypothetical situations from pivotal moments in character's lives. The first issue asks "What if Submariner had married the Invisible Girl?" This issue reverses the roles where the Submariner is more logical and Reed Richards (Mr Fantastic) behaves impulsively due to his jealousy over Sue Storm choosing Submariner over him. The next is about Dr Doom becoming heroic and fighting Mestopho for his mother's soul. After that there's an issue about the Hulk loosing his girlfriend Jarella (see "The Heart of the Atom" trade for the original back story issues) and becoming a warlord. Then "What if Gwen Stacy had lived?" which is a great issue, as are all Spider Man issues in the What If series.
The other issues involve Thor fighting Odin so he can be with mortal Jane Foster (a relationship Odin had forbidden) and a story from Captain America #250 where he does decide to run for president. The last issue is about the Man Thing.
Overall its a good volume before Marvel seemed to loose steam in later What If issues and started repeating itself.
