A very quick read., August 31, 2011
This review is from: What Coca-Cola Did to Stop the Union from Coming In (Paperback)
When I saw this book, published by Dorrance Publishing Company Inc., I was excited to request it from them for a review. I am an MBA student and somewhat of an amateur business historian. The title of this book indicated to me that it would be a very exciting book to read. I was disappointed.
If you are looking for a book you can read in about 20 minutes, this is the one. It is a very quick read and it is an interesting story. The problem is it is short on details. The author does write in an interesting style and is clear and, for the most part, concise with the story.
The author was working for Coca-Cola at one location when the workers voted to go union. The author indicates that twenty-two people were fired after the location went union, but he fails to name even one of them as proof that this did, in fact, happen. The author states that the firings stopped after the location voted to go non-union again. The author states that the company lied to the employees to get them to vote out the union, but does not give one example of what was promised and not delivered.
Later, the author is relocated to another Coca-Cola location and learns that the new location is planning to vote union. He states he is given money by the president of human resources to help sway the vote to go non-union. Our author accepts this money and photographs it. Later in the book we learn that Jeffrey Wright, the author, spent most of the money, but had enough left to hire himself an attorney. How honest is it to accept and spend a bribe? It seems that the author only went to the authorities after going to Coca-Cola and discussing it with the corporate office. It would seem like Mr. Wright only turned over his "evidence" after he did not get what he wanted from Coca-Cola.
This is an interesting story and would probably make a good chapter in a book about alleged corporate corruption. There is not enough information in this book to make a substantial book.
