Praise for What Color Is Your Parachute?

I was a bit skeptical at first with this book. Of course it is probably the most famous career/job book ever written, but I was concerned that it would go into detail on things I did not really care about - like determining what you want to do as a career...things I already knew. But I found the book very well-written and insightful for anyone looking for a job, trying to discover their career path, or considering making a career transition later in life.

The author has included a number of decision-making tools that really help sort through complex priorities, and his philosophy on job searching is very consistent with my own experience as a seasoned job search expert.

I guess the reason I like the book so much is I believe we are entering an era where traditional employment expectations are going out the window. People need to be creative in determining how they will earn a living. And finding something that you like to do as well.

I just turned 60, and still very much enjoy what I do, but am looking to a future where I would be considered "unemployable" based on my age. For me this means an internet-oriented business, that I can do anywhere, anytime. This business will be helping people find jobs in this economy. I'm the Job Hunting Insider.

...a journey of self discovery for the uninitiated or those facing a game change.

A VERY useful reference which deserves a spot on anyone's bookshelf - from the new job hunter, be it school leaver, new graduate or those seeking a career change in midlife. There is even one edition specifically written for retirees.

It quickly becomes apparent that this book is written by one who has walked the trail, mastered it, understanding and preempting every curve and offering really useful advice that only a veteran can, infusing his readers with hope and a plethora of workable ideas. A really useful chart for the challenging times ahead. Know thyself and find/ create thy niche.

The "Job-Hunter's Workbook" is good supplemental material to the foundational book "What Color is Your Parachute." I recommend reading the book first and then completing the workbook.

After achieving the career I thought I wanted, I suddenly found myself at 35 questioning my choices, looking to escape from my career. A friend recommended this book, and at first I resisted; it sat idly on my bookshelf until, in a final moment of desperation, I turned to it for what my friend had himself found in it...good advice. Great advice is what I found, advice that I took and which led me to a second career that I spent the next 25 years doing and enjoying. This book contains not only good advice, but also exercises to ferret out your strongest skills and, more importantly, the false assumptions you probably have about yourself, your potential, your strengths, and your preferences. I can honestly say this book directly and irrevocably changed my life for the better.

Most career-finding quizes that I've taken have been laughably transparent, asking questions like, "Do you enjoy accounting?" as though this would help you discover something you didn't already know. This workbook was very good at helping you dig down and see what's really important to you. I particularly like that it gives you decision trees to help simplify complex characteristic considerations.

One thing is that I have finished the workbook, and I have a set of characteristics to match up to a career, but I'm having trouble finding career-types that fit the set of qualifications that I now have laid out. I'm not sure how this could be added to a future workbook, but it would be excellent if there was more assistance in taking your abstract list of desires and making it into a list of real-world careers to look for.
